GMA Cancels Lambert, Books Brown

You might remember that when ABC’s Good Morning America canceled Adam Lambert’s planned performance appearance for his racy American Music Awards routine last Sunday, LambertKiss1.pngthe CBS “Early Show” hastily arranged an interview. The taped intro to that appearance then caused its own brouhaha because CBS blurred the AMA footage of Lambert kissing his male keyboardist, but then went on moments later to show footage of the Madonna-Britney kiss.*

If you think that would be the end of it, think again

ABC has now booked “Rihanna-beater” Chris Brown for an interview and a performance on — you guessed it — Good Morning America. Brown will do a performance and a taped piece with Robin Roberts that is scheduled to air the week after next.

Not surprisingly, that has some women’s groups and LGBT activists wondering how it is that a convicted girlfriend abuser is ok, but an openly gay man who simulated sex with a dancer and smooched his male keyboardist is not.

Meanwhile, there are those in the gay community who believe all of this is a setback the movement. And the Liberty Counsel did file a complaint with the FCC against ABC over Lambert’s “lewd and filthy” American Music Awards appearance.

* For the record, Madonna kissed both Britney and Christina Aguilera in the performance, but the full-on close-up of the lip-lock w/Britney gets all of the attention.

Are we just about the most immature and hypocritical culture going or does it only seem that way? Well, it makes for lots of "news" I guess, gives everyone something to get worked up about - from either one direction or the other.
  • Wow. You'd think all that happened was "a kiss". Joe, if that's all there'd been to it, hardly anybody would have batted an eye.

It really shouldn't be all that surprising that our culture is more freaked out by gay people and sexuality than by beating the snot out of a woman. Sad and enfuriating, but not surprising.

ETA: and "homosexuality" by women for the male gaze is a totally different thing, because it's still for the pleasure of straight men. Which is kind of the point of everything according to most of our cultural narratives.
