Thank you for the tubes...that joke just never gets old(I work in IT so I REALLY love that schtick). Anyhoo I agree, that is why I think it will fail in the end even if it does have some initial success. I am a jerk though and hope to nuke it if that is what they are trying to pull off and therefore hand Rupert yet another MySpace. FaceBook's popularity skyrocketed after he bought MySpace. Murdoch and NewsCorp have some fans but outside of that group their names are basically poison.

I agree with you, but it goes both ways. If FoxNews becomes associated with Bing, people will stop using Bing....I'll stop using Bing. I don't want my clicks encouraging anything that helps Murdoch. We also have to look at FoxNews demographics. I am guessing that half of their audience believe the internet is a series of tubes.

It has been my experience that if you give someone a partisan reason to do something irrational a large percentage of those partisans will do so without questioning it. In my opinion this will be framed as a right/left partisan issue by Fox news and WSJournal and the other conservative media will follow suit. I am not saying believe me, I am saying when/if you see it begin to happen please standup and mock loudly and openly as that is the only way to stop it.

The sad part is that I really believe this is what will happen. If you look at the 80's/90's as talk radio rose to prominence the screams of MSM partisanship went up not down even when the MSM began to cover some of the stories they were being attacked for missing. In other words whether or not the MSM was partisan conservative media created a market for itself with a PR strategy of showing why they were so needed and why you needed to listen to them. They created a market that may or may not have otherwise ever existed in large numbers. It was a bit of a hard sell then but I think we are so far down that path now that they will be able to "politicize" search engines at lightening pace because those that believe do so rabidly at this point(on both sides) and this will be the only way I can think of that NewsCorp can go paid content only without destroying their market share. It will still take a loss but not as much since they are beginning a process that I assume is the sign of a coming PR battle. Of course if enough people see it for what it is it will not work.

The linked to graph shows exactly why Murdoch will fail.

This is how people search...

First try google, then try yahoo, then try bing.

Unless Bing can beat Google in straight search capability, people will go to Google first.

I will make a prediction. Once this is ready to go Faux News and the Wall Street Journal will begin to question if Google is not partisan. After a bit they will have breaking stories of how it was Google not ACORN that really stole the election for Obama. This should get MS's search engine around 20% or so of the US voting publics traffic and we will have split search engines much like our news into two different and opposed segments. Slowly Wikipedia will be eclipsed on that search engine by Conservapedia and similar things until it is considered the conservative search engine, with an added bonus of never searching for something only to be confronted with an opposing view. If this happens MS will start to take flack for being partisan(its their search engine) and I would guess will move to a more neutral model infuriating all of its new customers. I may be off on one or two things but I think this is the rough plan. The problem I see is that it will move older voters to the new one while keeping younger people on Google which of course will just further solidify the current divide.
