Poisoned Wells and Hamster Wheels

Gems like these are why I so enjoy reading James Joyner at Outside the Beltway:

The two parties and their constituent interest groups have done a superb job of poisoning the well. Republicans have virtually ensured that we’ll never have anything short of a massive defense budget and we’ll never have the sort of confiscatory tax brackets for high earners that they have in Europe and we had here as recently as John Kennedy’s administration. And Democrats have made it a virtual certainty that we’ll not only not cut back on the social safety net but that it will incrementally increase and periodically boom. The “compromise” solution is massive deficit spending.

Unsustainable? Obviously — and it’s doubly sad, considering we’ve done this to ourselves.

Short of a massive national sea-change in attitudes and expectations, we’re well on the way to self-destruction…. and as much as I like Joyner’s “poisoned well” analogy, my mind keeps visualizing little hamsters running on a wheel.

I hate being a hamster, but I’m afraid I don’t see a way out at the moment.

    I agree with this.

I agree with the overall sentiment, but I propose a partner for your rodent, a lemming. I see lemmings on both sides, and I may have to jump off a cliff myself if the Palin in the a__ crowd, prevails.

    Hmmm…

Who was it again who quickly provided the largest fiscal bailout in US history back in 2008? Who was it who highjacked the largest amount of money from future US Taxpayers, our sons and daughters, in order to provide jet planes and italian vacations for a group of their elite friends who scuttled their own businesses through incompetence or for other reasons?

    Ahhh…

That's right, it was the GOP.

I got to thinking the other day about the whole Cheney/Bush deregulation thing, the last four years of their reign where they surely had to see the writing on the wall about GOP electability in 2008. And then the sudden crash of these businesses “needing a bailout” right at the end of their reign.
And getting it…courtesy of their GOP buddies in the last days of their powerhold…

    Hmm….I wonder?

I think more people in America would listen to the logic of liberal tax and spend economics over the stodgy redundant borrow and spend conservative economics if it weren’t for the bohemian crapolla coming from social liberals. This crap sucks the wind right out of common sense when it comes to liberal politics. What scares away political converts is this cornucopia of degenerate crap that has attached itself to the Democrat party and the placing of this crap in fiscal legislation, just to get it through, because it does not have national support. I believe that we do not need most social liberal agendas because they chase away more votes than they gather. Let social liberals form their own party.

  9. Leonidas says:

Both Partys are reluctant to reduce spending, at least as individual Congressmen, there are a few chanpions of it like Jeff Flake, Tom coburn and some ofthe Blue Dogs like Evan Bayh. You wont find many if any in the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Their solution is always spend more of other people's money.
