"they would let the Democrats pass this worthless health care bill"

This vote is but an initial formality, anyway. More importantly, the _real_ bill will be made in conference.

There's plenty of time for the GOP to start behaving intelligently, even if they'll remain sidelined, mainly.

We're still waiting for the long-overdue entitlement reform and rescue (that the Democrats avoided completely when Bush was in office, and in fact deliberately opposed, when they had, at the time, the best chance ever, surpassed only this year). We who wonder aloud about this deliberate negligence (in favor of expanding entitlements instead, and behaving even more, rather than less, irresponsibly) at least keep our corners lit, despite the abuse and continued silliness from the others.

A few of us even noticed what was done instead, such as to remove a years-long warning about the future growth in entitlement expenditures and growth of the federal government to a massive fraction of the future GDP. I suppose "reform" in the form of removing the following warning to the public by the Obama administration this year from the Trustees' Reports, is based on the presumption that those who are so easily exploited will remain blissfully carefree and ignorant, and resentful toward those who know better.

"It is noteworthy that over the past four decades, the average amount of total Federal revenues as a percentage of GDP has also been 18 percent, and has never exceeded 21 percent in a given year. Assuming the continued need to fund a wide range of other government functions, the projected growth in Social Security and Medicare costs would require that the total Federal revenue share of GDP increase to wholly unprecedented levels."

(Shhh.)

The Repubs are being tools in this whole process, and I think the cartoon at the top of the post is a perfect example of what they are doing. Having said that, I'm not sure the Dems are being very smart about the whole thing either. As Ron pointed out, insurance is going up with or without a bill.

From one of your excerpts:

The retirement system (Social Security) and health insurance for the elderly (Medicare) are headed for bankruptcy, with state and local pension funds and the federal pension insurance fund not far behind.

Gee, the government is doing such a great job with all of this...how about we let them do some more? Sooner or later, they're bound to get something right. If they don't, then it will just be a failed $1T experiment.

If the Republicans were smart, and I've seen no evidence for that, they would let the Democrats pass this worthless health care bill. Insurance rates are going up 16% in 2010 with or without the bill and the system is about to collapse. There is nothing in any of the bills being considered that will fix it and in fact any Democratic health care bill will be blamed for the collapse and the Republicans can say they voted against it.
