Yes, dogs really do bite mailmen

mailman_newman_seinfeld

A “dog warning card” arrived with my mail today. Thanks to a New Jersey branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers, you can see the form online. The form provides invaluable advice, such as “Do not deliver mail if you feel endangered by an animal.”

For a better understanding of the threats faced by America’s letter carriers, I recommend the following passage from The Postal Employee’s Guide to Safety (August 2006 edition), Section IX D:

Animals and Insects
1. General Rules
You are not required to deliver mail when an animal threatens you. Use extra care in making deliveries when dogs or other animals are loose on your route…

Neither antagonize nor attempt to pet dogs. If a dog rushes toward you or takes you by surprise, do not run. Retreat very slowly, facing the dog. Keep your mail satchel between you and the dog as a first line of defense. Be careful not to stumble over objects as
you retreat.

Use dog repellent spray only if you are attacked. Spray it directly at the dog’s eyes, nose, and mouth. Do not use dog repellent indiscriminately or when there is danger of spraying children or adults.

When delivering mail through a door slot, keep your fingers out of the slot; an animal may be on the other side.

Yikes.

The mailmen have it easy – in my youth I read electric meters. We frequently had to go in the backyard where they kept the real bad dogs and other vicious creatures. In addition to dogs I was attacked by geese and a roster.

    Dogs going postal.

So much for delivering Social Security, unemployment, and other welfare checks.

    “mailmen [...] electric meters”

    1. Where are the military recruiters? It's like inner cities providing training for battlefield surgeons.

    2. Where is the combat or hazardous duty pay? Makes more sense than typical overtime pay.

DLS…you said “So much for delivering Social Security, unemployment, and other welfare checks”

Are you serious? You think a carrier should battle a threatening animal for the sake of your receiving your welfare check? Can't you see the narcissism behind that? Tie the animal up. And if you are getting subsized money, why are you wasting money on dog food anyway?

  7. DLS says:

Rupzip: I was referring to the conditions the letter carriers and meter readers face in dangerous areas. Robberies and attacks to get welfare and Social Security checks are a serious threat in some places. (These are also places, along with more marginal locations, where mailboxes may be broken into by those seeking to steal these checks. It's also not tricky to think of actual recipients of checks, the beneficiaries, being robbed, too, of their checks, or after they cash them.)

  8. StockBoySF says:

DLS, “So much for delivering Social Security, unemployment, and other welfare checks.”

I read your further comments so I know what you mean… however I just can't resist making the obvious comment…. :)

I guess people who do want the Social Security, unemployment and other checks (and mail) delivered should not have animals meant to keep people away!
