Hugo Chavez: ‘Prepare for War … Colombia Now in U.S. Hands’ – Ultimas Noticias, Venezuela

As the Venezuela article we posted yesterday headlined If War Breaks Out, Venezuela’s ‘Fifth Column’ Will Have to Be Confronted ably demonstrates, tensions – and paranoia – are increasing along the Venezuela-Colombia border.

A few days ago during his weekly radio show Hello President, Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez told his country to ‘prepare for war’ against Colombia and the United States. This article from Venezuela’s Ultimas Noticias provides details of his comments not covered by the wire services.

According to this news account from Ultimas Noticias, the Venezuelan head of state said in part:

“This world is infected with a viral disease by which the most powerful use the most terrible violence against the most vulnerable … many people have had illusions of change in the United States with the arrival of Obama to the presidency. … We were always cautious about the triumph of President Obama; early on we began to realize the truth – that imperial rule there is alive and more menacing than ever. … One must talk to the master, and so I say to the president: don’t take a wrong turn and launch an aggression against Venezuela by using Colombia.”

Then, referring to the agreement signed last week permitting the U.S. to operate seven military bases in Colombia, Chavez said in part:

“The two governments have joined together in order to lie to the world, to try and lie to the world … Therefore, gentleman and fellow soldiers, let us not lose even a single day in fulfilling our primary mission: to prepare ourselves for war and to help the people prepare for war, because that is the responsibility of all of us.”

What is this all about? We are not going to war with Venezuela.

Honduran elections are coming up, he's likely trying to rouse the Marxist rabble with silly nonsense rhetoric.

    A couple items:

    http://en.mercopress.com/2009/11/06/us-will-rec...
“Secretary Clinton and Assistant Secretary Shannon have assured me that the US will recognize the outcome of the Honduran elections regardless of whether Manuel Zelaya is reinstated. I take our administration at their word that they will now side with the Honduran people and end their focus on the disgraced Zelaya” said the conservative Senator from South Carolina.

“I am happy to report the Obama Administration has finally reversed its misguided Honduran policy and will fully recognize the November 29th elections” added Senator DeMint.

    and then this:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idU...

Poor Hondurans are going hungry and their sick children cannot obtain medicines as donors cut aid to the country following a June coup that deposed President Manuel Zelaya, doctors and aid workers say.

Soup kitchens have closed, medicines have become scarce, foreign doctors have canceled trips to Honduras and funding for the poor to run small businesses have dried up, increasing unemployment.

So Obama and Clinton are going to reverse course after the election and try to correct their mistake with the elections as cover so that the people of Honduras aren't hurt anymore and they can try to save face. Meanwhile Chavez isn't happy about it and will try to work up anti-American sentiment and probably accuse us of rigging the election if he doesn't get a result his highness wants. The more people poor and hungry in Honduras the more he will be able to bribe support from by shipping in food and medicine too when the time is right, or through unofficial channels while officially cutting off aid.

Feels like another Af/Pak diversion. Like another gaff in the bullfight. Another torredor. Hey, wasn't Russia palling around there lately?

    Just a thought.

    Ole!

Sad thing is, we have a strong history of manipulating governments, deposing leaders, propping up dictators and funding insurgencies. Conservatives have always advocated these as a means to an end. Our credibility is not so hot.

It is a point of hilarity were it not so funny, to see on the one hand the US trying to subvert the region with troops in Columbia whilst we, on the other hand discover elsewhere in the NYT and in another incredible Glenn Greenwald article, -- that one of the major advisers to the war on Iraq, Galbreath, had a million dollar stake in the Kurdish oil. This is a guy who was in on the making of the Iraqi constitution and had been advocating dividing the country along ethnic lines. He was one of the experts we saw all over the media, with power and clout, and who had access to he President. My, my.......what must the world think of us? .

The duplicitous standards applied to Chavez blows my mind...........I ask again: What would the USA do if a neighboring country decided to invite a much larger nation's military to camp out there? Would we not be talking about the possibility of war, the need to shore up the borders....etc,

In this case, Baby Huey's not neccessarily trying (yet?) to achieve "Gran Colombia." (Simply having a more friendly or fearful government in Colombia is sufficient accomplished fact, someday soon.)

What is perhaps more timely is the question, to what extent this external strife is a diversion from problems happening currently at home. You know, the reality of the socialist paradise he has promised.
