Ex-Miss California USA Carrie Prejean Flips Out On CNN’s Larry King

Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean lost her cool on CNN over a question, labels it “inappropriate” and takes off her microphone. A note to politicians, celebrities et. al: When you do an interview or broadcast and there is an elephant-in-the-room question the way to handle it isn’t to walk off or turn off your microphone.

As a longtime former reporter, I can attest that when a news source in a forum where it is not on background or off the record says “No comment” — except for those who love, support or are allied to that news source — the news source comes off as not answering due to having something to hide or being embarrassed. Stripping away the inevitable ideological rhetoric of right and left and on this story, this appearance didn’t enhance her image. There are a zillion evasive ways to answer a tough question: just turn on the Sunday morning TV shows and watch politicians on those programs. Or bank CEOs before Congress or CEOs of insurance companies when grilled on health care questions.

Not a good P.R. move and whoever heard of someone suggesting Larry “So waddayathink…How do ya feel?” King who has thrown more softballs than all the softball leagues in America combined is an unfair, tough,”gotcha” interviewer? Anyone who did his or her advance prep could have handled this question — which was handled with the equivalent of someone sticking their fingers in their ears. Those who support her for partisan reasons may call it a masterful performance but that is spin and wishful thinking. (Perhaps it’ll start a new approach for talk show guests who don’t like questions: call it inappropriate, take off your mike and just sit there talking without a microphone and scold the host.)

This qualifies as “good television” due to the emotion — but it is lousy p.r. indicating poor advance preparation:

UPDATE: Here’s some other media reaction (views below do not necessarily reflect the opinion of TMV or its many writers):
–LA Times:

We’d like to call it “inappropriate” too. And maybe even throw a “misleading” for good measure. In the entertaining three-minute clip, Prejean becomes agitated when King repeatedly asks her why she dropped her claims of libel, slander, and religious discrimination against the Miss USA pageant. TMZ has reported that Prejean decided to strike a deal only after the lawyer for the pageant revealed a homemade sex tape of a 17-year-old Prejean.

King wasn’t asking about the particulars of the settlement, just why she settled, mind you. But Prejean repeatedly called him “inappropriate,” took off her microphone, and appeared to want to leave. She never really owned that moment, we should add. She fumbled, looked around the room, and stayed sitting in the chair, even though she had removed her mike.

And then after the commercial break — which you don’t see on the clip that hit cyberspace last night — Prejean is still in her seat. She didn’t go anywhere. There was still her new book, “Still Standing” to promote. So she forgave King for his other violation — Prejean’s publicist had set some rules: no phone calls and King had turned to his phone lines when she refused to answer his “inappropriate” questions.

Baltimore Sun blog:

Prejean, who is selling a book, has this rap she’s also selling in recent interviews as to how “conservative women” are treated poorly by the “liberal” press.I think her primary goal is to somehow link herself to Sarah Palin whom she mentions a lot. And so, last night, she decided to do a little agit prop playacting, even though Larry King is one of the nicest, kindest interviewers on the face of the Earth, let alone TV. There was absolutely nothing “inappropriate” about what he asked. She later said it was inapprorpiate for him to take phone calls, even though that is what the Larry King show almost always does.

New York Daily News:

No one’s voting Carrie Prejean for Miss Congenialty, thanks to a temper tantrum on “Larry King Live” last night.

During the televised interview, the 22-year-old beauty queen refused to answer King’s questions about her lawsuit settlement with the Miss California organization.

Asked about the motivation for the settlement itself (and if it might have anything to do with her recently released sex tape), Prejean answered through pursed lips, “Larry, you’re being inappropriate.”

It’s a mantra she repeated many times to the venerable show host before he opened the phone line to callers.

The moment the first caller said, “I’m a gay man,” Prejean began unhooking her microphone from underneath her sweater and whispering to someone in the wings before staring blankly at the camera.

“I can’t hear you,” she said, like a six-year old on a playground.

“That’s because you took the mic off,” King replied.

“I think you’re being extremely inappropriate right now, and I’m about to leave your show,” Prejean repeated before flashing a bright white pageant smile.

With all this talk of propriety, Prejean may keep in mind that she is currently starring in both a sex tape and nude photos that are making the rounds.

--EOnline:

Larry King got the fallen beauty queen so fired up on CNN’s Larry King Live last night, she walked out on the show.

Prejean is in the middle of a publicity bonanza hawking her new book, Still Standing, which details her clash with Donald Trump, Shanna Moakler and the rest of the Miss California organization.

After she showed off the tome and talked about her love for Sarah Palin—she considers herself “Palinized”—King began to ask about Prejean’s recent settlement with the pageant organizers. She continued to spout her party line…that is, until she called King inappropriate and ripped off her microphone…

…..After a quick commercial break, she claimed King and her publicist had agreed that she would take no viewer questions. He said he was unaware of that agreement and so ended the episode of Inappropriate King Live.

To think—he didn’t even ask if she was going to take the million-dollar porno deal!

Wonder what she’ll say to her ex-boyfriend—the one who dropped the bombshell sex tape—when she hears he told TMZ that she urged him to “lie” and say she was 17 in the raunchy video. He claims, however, to have received the tape in 2007, when she was 20-years-old.

--CBS News frames it this way:

Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean made a short but dramatic appearance on Larry King Live Wednesday, in which she refused to answer an openly gay caller and threatened to walk off the show, after King asked questions about the role a sex tape may have played in a lawsuit settlement.

And of course it was argued by left and right with predictable positions (defend or blast) on The View.

    A quick correction.

Carrie Prejean was never Miss USA, she was first runner up.
  • joegandelman
You put in the comment as this was corrected.
  • Leonidas
Pretty much non news except for the Paparazzi.

Once upon a time a woman would simply throw her drink on a man for loutish behavior, too bad she didn't have a glass of water that could reach the caller, and probaly larry King as well. She said "No" and "no" means "no". She told him multiple times.

I support gay marriage rights, but I don't support rudeness and intolerance from gays.
  • JSpencer
Apparently she wants to be in the kitchen sans heat... or in the case of Larry King, sans a slight warming effect.
  • Leonidas
Apparently she had more class than either King or the caller. I disagree with her views of gay marriage, but I applaud her classy performance. The second one I've seen recently, the other being from Tom Tancredo (who I don't care for particularly much as far as politics) who walked out on the loutishness of Markos Moulitsas.
  • JSpencer
You "applaud her classy performance"? Are you talking about her make-up or something? Because if she can't handle Larry King live then she can't handle anyone live. Is the bar really this low now?
  • tidbits
Prejean has done a sex tape, semi-nude photo shoot, filed a very public lawsuit, published a book and done everything possible to throw herself into the public eye.

Now, to promote her book and her persona, she agrees to appear for an interview and throws a fit when she doesn't like the questions? Not classy. Just immature. Maybe she's just not ready for prime time...can't wait to see the SNL skit on this one.
  • DLS
"Pretty much non news except for the Paparazzi."

But, she is also the object of disturbed behavior and hatred from the Left since she made her gay marriage remark. "Instant manufactured controversy and diseased outrage"
  • Leonidas
Well if you call a solo video made for a boyfriend by a teenager a "sex tape", Kinda hard to have a "sex tape without any actulal sex I thought,.... oh well learn something new every day...... and if a wind blowing a garmet in such a way that a female breast being revealed shocks you, sure. LOL Personally I'm not so prudish.

I also doubt she made her "sex tape" with the intent of drawing attention to herself, I just don't buy your argument one bit..

Only thing this has shown is that Liberals are almost as bad as conservatives about wanting to get in people's bedroom. Good for her that she had the decency to not comment as its none of anyone else's business but her own.

Personally, making an erotic tape for your heterosexual boyfriend as a teen does absolutely nothing to make her view on gay marriage hypocritical, its simply a slime machine being constucted by low life to make ad hominem attacks on her that don't pertain to the actual issue of gay marriage. In other words sleeze.

Sometimes I find it difficult to remain pro-gay marriage and on the same side of an argument with these sleezebots, but their behavior, while vulgar with regard to Miss Prejean, does not mean that they shouldn't have the right to live without others imposing their morals on them regarding their choice of life-mate, too bad so many of them can't practice the toleration they preach.
  • tidbits
Trying to make this into a liberal/conservative issue is just silly. This is typical celebrity press coverage. All they care about is whether or not it is sensational, not anyone's political leanings. Just glance at the cover of the tabloids next time you're in a supermarket check-out. The celebrity press is an equal-opportunity slander machine. Not everything is politically motivated, though there sure are a lot of people on both sides who are now trying to turn it into that.
  • JeffersonDavis
    Gee, I don't know, tidbits.
If King had agreed to "no calls" to the publicist, then she had every right to say no or to refuse the question. King, a sensationalist at times, took advantage of the situation - assuming the claim of a pre-show agreement to no call-in questions is true.

And yes, the SNL skit should be awesom. I personally don't care much for the woman, per se, even though she shares my thoughts on same-sex marriage. She's hardly the "Christian victim" she makes herself out to be. Yes, we all make mistakes (sex tape, etc), but she's continuing to try to make a living from the "mistake she made a long time ago".

I have very little sympathy, and even less money for her book.
  • roro80
" Kinda hard to have a "sex tape without any actulal sex "

Would you prefer us to call it a video in which the woman in question appears naked and touches herself until she orgasms? "Sex tape" was probably being used as a less graphic version of what she was doing, but it's up to you.
  • roro80
that wasn't for you tidbits, obviously for Leonidas.
  • DLS
"Good for her that she had the decency to not comment as its none of anyone else's business but her own."

I saw and heard part of the interview. She handled King's pestering quite well.

More people need to be tougher with misbehaving interviewers. If someone is asked an inappropriate question or one that won't be answered once, that is it. Period. Asking it again, later, is grounds for prompt cancellation (and full payment of any fees due as an appropriate, punitive type of forfeiture).
  • roro80
"I also doubt she made her "sex tape" with the intent of drawing attention to herself"

No, she got up on her high church-y horse with the intent of drawing attention to herself. She's been talking about "morals" with the intent of drawing attention to herself. She's been talking about denying gays the right to marry due to her church-driven morals and values. I don't personally think its amoral to make a sex tape (stupid, but not amoral), but my values are very different than what this young woman has been saying hers are.

I agree fully, bloggers on political forums seem obsessed with this, as does the gay marriage movement. Very silly.

I think thats a bit too long, I think "erotic tape" or "masturbation tape" would suit. The language doesn't offend me, its the lack of accuracy. Personally I see nothing wrong with masturbation and making a tape if you wish, I do see something wrong with trying to essentially blackmail someone with a tape of masturbation.
  • Leonidas
    *shrug*

Obama said he smoked dope and did coke as a teen, I look at the people who wish to condemn Prejean for her tape like I look at those on the right who wanted to judge Obma for the indiscretions of his youth, lets just say that view is not very flattering.

I wonder if anyone on these board had such model teenage years that they did absolutely nothing then that disagrees with heir sense of what is proper and what is not as adults. Let he is is not living in the glass house throw the first stone.
  • tidbits
Geez, r, if you can't tell the difference between me and Leonidas one of the three of us is doing something wrong. LOL
  • DLS
    Side note:

"Obama said he smoked dope and did coke"

He admitted more than Dubya (Bush) did...
  • roro80
    Fair enough, both counts.
  • roro80
"one of the three of us is doing something wrong"

I'll take the blame for that one; my brain isn't really working today!
  • I didn't think King pestered her. "What motivated the settlement" could have been handled many other ways (I can think of a few good answers). I think it wasn't about immaturity either. Too me, she performed to get a reaction (that is going on in Left and Right Blogtopia). Right Blogtopia circles the wagons, Left Blogtopia fires the guns. And Prejean sells books. Easy as pie.

I think I'll say the conservative media picks on me because of my alternative BBQ. Then I'll get interviewed by Rachael Maddow and get all perturbed! I smell the dollars, folks!

--[if she can't handle Larry King live then she can't handle anyone live]--

That’s not really true. They are not hanging on to that old fart for nothing. He gets away with blurting out some mighty intrusive questions that others would never get away with.

This is funny in so many ways. A sex tape,---hilarious. Can you say hypocrite Her quotes that people are trying to silence her . Yet she is everywhere. She is getting her 15 minutes and she really doing ok, nsidering she appears to have an IQ of about 80.
  • Leonidas

Only if the tape had been made for a lesbian lover.
  • Wasn't Prejean's fifteen minutes of fame over six months ago?

I realize that as one time Miss California, she was more famous than most of us will ever be, but this seems to be dragging on for an inordinate amount of time. When you think of the people in the world who have done more for the world (good or bad) and received less media attention, this all seems so silly.

How did one person become so famous for doing so little? Is this all the result of her answering a single political question during the Miss USA pageant? Her answer wasn't even all that memorable. It was neither a hate-filled diatribe toward gays, nor was it a heart-felt stand against the status quo. Yet people who disagreed with her remark made her out to be some monster while people who agreed with her remark made her out to be a hero. Yet she was neither.

Each and every one of us at this blog have made comments far more controversial and far more brave than anything Prejean said during the Miss USA pageant. Prejean is a controversy made up by the media for the purpose of increasing ratings and partisan hatred. And sadly, Prejean is going along with it, playing up the conservative victim card.

If CNN violated the terms of the agreement made before the show, then they are obviously wrong. But it seems silly to me for Prejean to demand this kind of media attention and publicity and then shirk away from scrutiny and tough questions. The whole "sex tape" issue really ought to be a non-issue. It's hardly as shocking or sensational as the media is making it out to be.

    But then again--so was Prejean.

  • JeffersonDavis
    "church-driven morals and values".

Be careful here roro. I know what you mean, but the Christians do not advocate her "morals".
You are using the word church in an almost derrogatory manor. She may have simlar views of same-sex marriage, but their are also atheists with the same views. You can be a "moral" person and not believe. Your faith is in your actions - and in your reactions. The proof is in the pudding, right?

She is hardly a role-model. As I said... I have very little sympathy.
  • mlhradio
Personally, I think that Prejean is a classless lout who is also a hypocrite for pushing her 'family' values while trying to hide that she did not practice what she preached.

    *However*...

It really doesn't matter what I think, because I am not her target audience. Nor are the majority of the people on The Moderate Voice, I would imagine. Remember - she is trying to sell her book, and the target demographic is that tiny (and shrinking) slice of Americana that praises Sarah Palin and likes to play the "liberal media victim" card at any chance they can get.

And by that, I think she played to "her" crowd perfectly. While she may have appeared crass and whiny and small-minded to most of the people watching her on King or commenting about her performance afterwards, it's all in the mind of the beholder. For "her" crowd, she appeared like a hero and strong woman who was willing to stand up the the Bad Boy King and his invasive, meanie-man questions.

Interview did exactly what it was supposed to do - play into the current narrative she is trying to portray about herself, and get attention for her new book.

being a book author pub'd by major publisher, I'd say this

there is NO such thing as going on any major news show and the host agreeing to treat your oh so sensitive 'issues' as off the record. Otherwise they'd pass on the author.

secondly, knowing the marketing madness that goes on at big pubs, and watching Miss Prejean's stiff performance, i'd wager dollars to donuts that her so-called mike-off was pre-planned. Her broken record repetition of 'inappropriate' was staged.... and poorly delivered at that.

where the rubber meets the road in christian families who are sincere, I can guarantee that no christian father or mother raising a daughter or son, would hold Prejean up as a model to be emulated. Exactly the opposite. Her 'audience' is other than that huge group. Reason why her book has no legs and no sell through.
  • StockBoySF
Yeah, well whatever. She was hoping to sell a book and Larry King was trying to improve his ratings. She's naive. Yawn.
  • tidbits
In seeing her performance replayed yesterday evening, I agree that her lead up to and mic-off antic appeared to be pre-planned, staged and badly acted on her part.
  • tidbits
    Hi JD.

You made an excellent point. Whatever Prejean says, her actions do not reflect Christian values. They reflect a kind of petty, ammoral self obsession.

My further speculation: she may be lying about having been only 17 when the sex tape was made. By claiming to have been a minor, she puts it in the category of child pornography in an attempt to thwart its distribution. I'll bet many are at work trying to disprove her claim on this (for prurient and profit motivations). I don't think we've heard the last of that part of the story.
  • DLS
T-Steel: If the settlement is confidential and she told King that she wasn't going to talk about it, King had not business whatsoever persisting or asking any additional questions about what was a closed matter. The issue was closed. King is not the only one who does this, but he was the one that night and there was no excuse for such misconduct -- deliberate, antagonistic, confrontational, inexcuseable misconduct.

Nobody has any business being repetitively inappropriate in cases like this -- it is pestering people.

It's as though King (and others who do this) are children or low-lifes who simply believe they can flout rules and standards of conduct and if they persist, eventually the other party will concede and give them what they want. It's like children who, being told "no," repeat their demands, over and over. Disgusting.
  • roro80
JD -- I've explained my views on this before, but maybe not to you. I, as an athiest (for the most part), am in no position to judge whether she is a real Christian or not. She says she holds these views because of her Christian faith, and I am not going to second guess that. While there are athiests who have the same views on gay marriage, both she and you have said that your views are because of your faith, so I'm not sure what your objection is. You might not like her or have sympathy for her, but that doesn't preclude her from being a Christian whether you like it or not. She's just a Christian you don't like. My morals and values are not church-driven, hers are -- I know they are because she said they are. So I really don't see why I need to be careful on this.
  • JeffersonDavis
I got ya, Roro. Thanks for the clarification.
But as I said above.... I knew what you meant by the statement. I just wanted others to know that she doesn't "stand" for Christian values. She can say whatever she likes, but it's just not the case. Like millions of others, she merely picks-and-chooses the parts of Christianity that benefit her or that gel with her own belief system. Well, that may be "partial" Christianity, but it ain't Christianity.

I didn't say I didn't like her. I probably wouldn't, though. I've never met the woman, and I will make no effort to judge her heart. That's above my paygrade.
  • roro80
Hey JD, maybe I'm not understanding you here. She doesn't think gays should get married because of her Christian faith. You don't think gays should get married because of your Christian faith. From what stems your assertion that "it ain't Christianity"?
  • JeffersonDavis
    "it ain't Christianity".

That means that a person's actions dictate their "Christianity".
Prejean claims that she is against same-sex marriage because of her faith. That's fine.
Then the entire rest of her life doesn't keep with that same faith.
She's being disingenuous to herself and the public when she attributes her beliefs on same-sex marriage to her faith - but doesn't really walk the walk.
  • DLS
"She's being disingenuous to herself and the public when she attributes her beliefs on same-sex marriage to her faith - but doesn't really walk the walk."

The attacks on her have not only been excessive and scummy and made her the news item she otherwise never would be, but it's no surprise if she's exploiting the politics of the situation now, just as she's also marketing herself by risking additional mistreatment by making appearances such as on King's show. Every spare moment she was on camera, she looked right at the camera and flashed that dazzling model's or beauty contestant's smile. I looked at and into her eyes (and into her soul, though that window) and sensed that it was contrived, and she could well have mastered that smile and gentle, relaxed as well as confident image-management while thinking all kinds of ugly thoughts, and I even wondered how easy it would have been to have her looking at the camera and smiling like that, selling her image and herself, while at the same time holding a loaded gun under the interview table either at the camera operator(s), or a loaded gun pointed right at Larry King's -- anatomy.
