A ham sandwich on Yom Kippur

“Having a ham sandwich on the afternoon of Yom Kippur doesn’t make you less Jewish,” Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet, chairman of the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue, said recently.

I feel like this may be a license for mis-behavior. (If you’re interested in the context of Rabbi Schochet’s remark, click here.)

Well if your a jew that can get behind bombing the Palestinians on the Sabbath [remember last late December, during their holy days], then eating a ham sandwich isn't really going to make a difference where you're headed..

In fact, you might as well put a slab of cheese on that ham and serve it with a side of clams and blood sausage for all it matters at that point.

I know the previous post was meant to be sarcastic, but there actually is an exception to Sabbath observance for participation in a just war. To be clear, the real issue from a Jewish perspective is whether the war is just (and conducted justly). Not whether the war is on the Sabbath.

How about a tunafish sandwich? :-)
