The major issue I have with assessments like this is that they ignore American culture as well as recent American history. The "lone nut with a gun" trick has been going strong in this nation since the 1960's. If being a muslim makes us judge him any differently then that whole thing about freedom of religion will make us become a world laughing stock and it will be deserved. If we start judging our soldiers and citizens by their religious affiliation the terrorists win. They win more recruits, they win a big PR battle and the US starts to look more and more like a colonial/crusader nation instead of one based on freedom. They attacked us on 9/11 and on a silver platter we handed over our freedoms and then began to talk about good and evil like we were a pope in the middle ages, and all the while they had more recruits/money and power. We began treating them like isolated criminals and their recruiting numbers fell and we began to fix our image in the ME. Which of those two paths should we decide to go down now? I still fail to see how giving up our freedoms fixed the problem so now we are talking about serving up our founding ideals since that whole restriction of freedoms thing did not resolve the issue?
