Great article! It really points out the limitations of present day attitudes about what makes a person smart. The type of problem solving ability that comes from genuine curiosity and being engaged with life in a broad way will trump pure IQ every time. Formal education is also important (of course), but is only one component when it comes to the ability to make rational decisions. Needless to say, when partisanship becomes a contributing factor in the attempt to think coherently, a certain amount of objectivity is bound to be lost. We are a society that loves shortcuts and stereotypes… to our detriment.

It used to be said that you have to know “when to come out of the rain”,. Now, too often, it's: We have to take a poll and check populist opinion so we can decide if we should come in out of the rain.

Funny, Obama doesn't have “spine,” but George W. Bush was stubborn and wouldn't listen to others once his mind was made up, etc. Guess we can't be satisfied with anyone, so hard are we Americans to please.

Hey bonehead…. The article was not kind to GW Bush. It said he was intelligent according to IQ, but lacking when it came to common sense. Why did you equate that to someone whining about Bush vs Obama?

The article is dead on the mark. High IQ, in my experience, typically belongs to folks who could invent a new type of nuclear weapon, and then test it with a sledgehammer. There are a few out there that have both high IQ AND high comprehensive (common sense) intelligence – they just don't run for President very often. The jury is still out on Obama's decision-making ability. He's an excellent executive thus far, and he is intelligent…..but Don Quijote is right…. The spine is lacking.

Just go to a garage and talk with a mechanic about cars, now some have high IQs and some don't, but most of them likely know more about cars and fixing them than a high IQ automotive engineer who belongs to mensa.
