Appreciate your comment, but I will not go against my brother's wishes. He honestly doesn't want to be particularly noted for his actions and I'll limit my comments to standard sibling praise.

I will mention one more item though, one of the things that my brother was most proud of that I'm aware of regarding his time in the military. As per usual with my brother, it wasn't about him, but about one of his students when he was an instructor for some of the best of the army officer corp at the advanced officer training program at Ft Levenworth.

My brother was incredibly proud of then Lt. Col. Paul L. Yingling for writing this piece:

http://www.armedforcesjournal.com/2006/10/2088425/

Considering my brother's thought about the military and Iraq, which I largely agree with, I think he could have written the article himself.

I remember you mentioning about your brother and about his reluctance to claim credit or publicity.

True heroes say that they were only doing their duty, or--as you say--"only doing what [they were] trained to do and what [their] instincts told [them.]"

However, that shouldn't keep others from sharing such heroism with others. You should consider writing a Guest Voice piece on your brother.

In the meantime, thank him for his service and heroism.

Dorian

My brother is also a decorated veteran. He pulled a young private out of a minefield after he had been injured by an exploding mine. My brother charged through the minefield, under enemy fire, and pulled the soldier out carrying him over his shoulders. When my brother is asked about it, he says much of what Sgt. Ortiz did, he was only doing what he was trained to do and what his instincts told him.

Our veteran do indeed deserve praise for their sacrifices, and our heroes for their valor. But we must also recognize the incredible job done in training these people by our military, and the incredible job that certain parents did in teaching their children and giving root to the hero inside of them.

P.S. don't hold my averageness against my parents, they produced a hero and my own lack of exceptionality is not on them, LOL.
