In addition, there is great dishonesty in the willingness to beat plowshares into swords on such a massive scale (knowing they will be used, even if a war has to be drummed up – look at our history) and still claiming to be guided by a higher christian power – or claiming to be concerned about high taxation or socialism for that matter. Hypocrisy doesn't even begin to describe that sort of mindset. Imagine the things that could be done if this level of resource expenditure was being turned toward necessary endeavors of a creative rather than a destructive nature.

We have more military people in accounting than most militaries have people. A stalwart republican told me in my office three days ago: “the military budget must never be cut to liberal Bill Clinton lows”. I asked him if he had ever counted military golf courses He gave me a long, hard stare from a reddening face.

In general conservatives believe in a strong military, of course so do many Dems, but overall as people you would not have any problem with the idea of fitting means to the task. Give the military money to do what they need not just give them money for the sake of it. And the whole of federal spending is not encapsulated by medicare/social security and the military.
