The “non-liberal” are now the extreme minority, and, save for lip-service, are pretty much irrelevant anyway. If your non-liberal representatives that are still in Washington would like to leave, they are free to do so. We wouldn’t want them to stay where they don’t fit in.

It's not as bad an idea as what we have now. It would have to be separate from the military, but a domestic corp that replaced welfare programs for the able-bodied would probably come closer to the ideal of helping the needy without encouraging them to be needy, especially if the men and women were separated.

Good article and sadly, a good idea--one I've long advocated. Put the military to work on our infrastructure. After all, there's never a complaint about thousands of able bodied workers paid to sit and wait, but all kinds of hand wringing if the government wants to pay anyone to do something other than warring. And like you, I see so-called "conservatives" as willing, in fact ardently determined, to pump money massively into the military, but not a dime for undeserving unemployed people.

The "prison industrial" complex is similarly enshrined and was the subject of a sad but true cartoon in which a school administrator is telling a colleague "it's not ideal, but we solved the budgetary problem." Outside on the sign, the Mayville Jr. High School has been renamed the Mayville Juvenile Correctional Facility.

Dangers of generalization notwithstanding, Marc does a good job of pointing out a huge and continuing problem our country has faced for a long time. Unless one is suffering from paranoia, excessive ideological programming, or is genuinely not aware of how the military industrial complex functions in this country, it's a hard trend to justify this in what is supposed to be a leading, civilized country.

In addition, there is great dishonesty in the willingness to beat plowshares into swords on such a massive scale (knowing they will be used, even if a war has to be drummed up - look at our history) and still claiming to be guided by a higher christian power - or claiming to be concerned about high taxation or socialism for that matter. Hypocrisy doesn't even begin to describe that sort of mindset. Imagine the things that could be done if this level of resource expenditure was being turned toward necessary endeavors of a creative rather than a destructive nature.

"I'm stopping reading this is some absurd fairy tale that has no basis in logic or fact." ~ EE

Of course that is your prerogative, but refusing to acknowledge something doesn't change the reality of it. I will give you this much though, the D's are complicit as well... although to a lesser degree.

I see that you haven't read Jonathan Swift's "A modest proposal"...

I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance
in London, that a young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year
old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether
stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it
will equally serve in a fricasie, or a ragoust.

I do therefore humbly offer it to publick consideration, that of
the hundred and twenty thousand children, already computed,
twenty thousand may be reserved for breed, whereof only one
fourth part to be males; which is more than we allow to sheep,
black cattle, or swine, and my reason is, that these children are
seldom the fruits of marriage, a circumstance not much regarded
by our savages, therefore, one male will be sufficient to serve
four females. That the remaining hundred thousand may, at a year
old, be offered in sale to the persons of quality and fortune,
through the kingdom, always advising the mother to let them suck
plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump, and
fat for a good table. A child will make two dishes at an
entertainment for friends, and when the family dines alone, the
fore or hind quarter will make a reasonable dish, and seasoned
with a little pepper or salt, will be very good boiled on the
fourth day, especially in winter.

Marc Pascal, you are the god of rant. Another most perfect article encapsulating all that I feel. You have the best read on the blog!

--"shuffling mountains of paperwork and marching endlessly to Sousa Marches"-----lol

We have more military people in accounting than most militaries have people. A stalwart republican told me in my office three days ago: “the military budget must never be cut to liberal Bill Clinton lows”. I asked him if he had ever counted military golf courses He gave me a long, hard stare from a reddening face.

"It goes without argument that conservatives and Republicans view the sole role of the Federal Government as provider of National Defense – and everything else is superfluous."

Why does it go? No one I know thinks that way and I consider myself conservative. Even the Libertarians I know don't go as far as your absurd statement.

"Republicans support these expenditures unquestionably"

Again with the absurd and factually incorrect statements.

"Conservatives’ only answer to different political, economic, social, or international issues is to turn to the Military. They even advocate drastic cuts in Medicare and Social Security payments to reduce the recession-caused $1.4 trillion 2009 federal deficit and the nearly $10 trillion in accumulated federal debt so as not to raise any taxes or cut any Military spending. "

So conservatives solution to single parent households is military? What? Every issue right? Asinine blanket statements again. In general conservatives believe in a strong military, of course so do many Dems, but overall as people you would not have any problem with the idea of fitting means to the task. Give the military money to do what they need not just give them money for the sake of it. And the whole of federal spending is not encapsulated by medicare/social security and the military.

"Due to the deep recession, our volunteer Military has met or exceeded all its recruiting goals for the past fiscal year and is on track to do so again next year."

And they did so when the economy was good even in the midst of the "wars"

"Private businesses will not hire until they see new paying customers and increasing gross revenues. They do not make expansion plans based upon tax breaks or the size of the Federal Deficit. Only the Federal Government can provide the needed stimulus to get this economy going. "

"Only the Federal Government" Are you kidding me? You may feel it's the best way but the idea that nothing else would ever work is .......... I can't even think of a word that encompasses such lack of understanding of history and fact as this.

I'm stopping reading this is some absurd fairy tale that has no basis in logic or fact.

Yes, yes, and yes. We should not be using all those subcontractors. Draft citizens into those jobs for public service. If we can't move more swiftly and much more realistically in this crisis, we will be looking back on our once powerful nation much sooner than we think.
