When McConnell's thesis surfaced, I thought he was done. Apparently, Virginia didn't care as much about what someone said twenty years ago than what they proposed to do tomorrow, on a practical level.

Oh wise sage prognosticators. What a load of crap. Virginia voted anti-incumbent, as they ALWAYS do (well, for the past 33 years). NJ also voted anti-incumbent, in this case a rich dinosaur tied to the banks that brought the economy to its knees. Anyone who thinks a vote AGAINST big business, big finance insiders is good for the GOP is, well, dreaming.

Further left? I thought the Obama campaign was way to the left; he promised a lot of left-liberal "changes" back then.

"Now we are seeing some repudiation of the Democratic run away from the center."

This is the essence of what is happening. Virginia is the best of the well-reported examples, and that state is a model for not only other Southern states but the rest of the Sun Belt and hence the future of the USA -- and it's far from the monolithic "Red Nation" (much less Bible Belt and much less still the "far right" myth the far left spews incessently). What has been observed here is indeed a reaction by the mainstream against the far-left behavior we've been "treated" to this year.

The sub-plot that is timely is that as with the Dems, who are fracturing and stumbling among themselves from overreach and loss of coherence in Washington, you have a similar behavior associated with the far left small fraction of the electorate and to a lesser extent, solid Dem voters, who were dysfunctional, not merely apathetic, where they were not instead just amotivational or demotivated. (The opponents were the ones who were motivated this year.)

This election is no 1994 but a 1994 is not required to teach smarter people the not-too-far-left lesson, however.

The Democrats after winning in 2008 have run to the left, is it any surprise that they left behind many moderates and independents for the GOP to sweep in and grab, is it any wonder the GOP did just that? Obama's victory was not a victory of a liberal ideology, but a repudiation of Bush. Now we are seeing some repudiation of the Democratic run away from the center.

The worst enemy of the GOP during elections is the far right neo-conservative wing, the worst enemy of the Democrats are the far left Progressive wing.

The new trend in politics, in case it has escaped people, is to think for oneself and vote accordingly. And to avoid labels altogether. The internet has given the gift of knowledge to those who used to blindly obey their family's party ilk. You know, the rigid boundaries within which they were raised to believe.

I've said this a bunch of times. The internet has changed politics forever. The old machine ran on blind loyalty. The internet is like the sun shining in on the dingy, filthy corners of politics. It's refreshing to think that if you input new data, even rigid minds can still compute intelligent, independent thoughts.

The interesting thing about McConnell is that he defeated a relatively conservative Democrat who ran a horrible campaign and moved the left only in Northern Virginia, if only to distinguish himself from McConnell.

From what I've read of the Virginia governor-elect, it's more of a case of hiding what he really is and running like a moderate when he is anything but that. The proof will be in the governing.
