You Mean, There’s More Than One Bill Ayers? There’s More Than One Jeremiah Wright?

William Ayers, the former member of the Weather Underground, and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Pres. Obama’s former pastor, did not visit the White House at any time during the nine months Obama has been in office.

But you wouldn’t know that if you had read a bunch of right-wing commentary about the release of the White House visitor logs:

Early this evening, the White House voluntarily released nearly 500 visitor records of “individuals visiting the executive mansion between Inauguration Day and the end of July.” The easily-searchable list includes some famous names like Michael Jordan, Michael Moore, William Ayers, and Jeremiah Wright. Of course, the mere suggestion of Ayers and Wright has sent the right wing into a tizzy.

A screen capture of tweets from Michael Goldfarb and Mary Katharine Ham (The Weekly Standard), Amanda Carpenter (The Washington Times), and Ed Morrissey (Hot Air) follow, and then TP’s reporting continues:

But as the original post by White House ethics counselor Norm Eisen makes clear, the “William Ayers” and “Jeremiah Wright” on the list are actually different individuals who merely share the same name:

Given this large amount of data, the records we are publishing today include a few “false positives” – names that make you think of a well-known person, but are actually someone else. In September, requests were submitted for the names of some famous or controversial figures (for example Michael Jordan, William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright, Robert Kelly (”R. Kelly”), and Malik Shabazz). The well-known individuals with those names never actually came to the White House.Nevertheless, we were asked for those names and so we have included records for those individuals who were here and share the same names.

Mainstream news outlets have reported this fact accurately. But for the right wing, the story was simply too good to be fact-checked.

Tsk, tsk, that conservative media. Just can’t trust ‘em to get a story right. Well, maybe right — but not correct.

  • Well Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright were political lightening rods during the Presidential campaign season that still has traction among a sizable amount of conservatives. So will I admonish conservative media for trying? Nope. Because liberals will do and have done the same with political lightening rods as well. Why worry about facts when you can stir up your respective bases? It's a tried and true routine that is quite tired in many ways.

Actually, I find this very amusing.

"Tsk, tsk, that conservative media. Just can’t trust ‘em to get a story right. Well, maybe right — but not correct."

If only we held the same standard for the liberal media - NYT, NBC, etc.
I guess when the media is skewed toward your own liberal agenda, you don't mind lies so much.

    Pity.

So... the "liberal media" got it wrong and William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright did visit the White House after all?

AR, of course it's amusing! I can't help but laugh. It strikes some cord in my sense of humor.

Another topic since I haven't heard anything for a while: How's Vicky adjusting?

    SB -

Thanks for asking. I had put a quick update up the other day, but I have noticed you haven't been around as much, so you must not have seen it. You don't have like a life or something do you? :-)

Anyway, to repeat my last Vicki post (and expand it a bit), Vicki is doing well. Rehab is slower than she wishes (I think she thought as soon as she was back home, everything would magically be back to normal!), but despite the occasional moments of frustration, she continues moving forward.

Today in fact she is down getting her new retired military ID, then going to the college to arrange her GI Bill paper work. She has decided to go back full-time this spring semester rather than just part-time to start, and is probably going to get her own place to live in January. She says she is happy here with us, but she is 20, and just feels the need for her independence. We support her decision, of course.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

AR, thanks for the info- I'm glad she's doing well. I did miss the update, I've been btwn SF and LA, leaving little time to scrutinize the posts and comments.

Going to college full time makes sense. She'll do well. Nothing is better for one's self-esteem and attitude than accomplishing goals.

And of course Vicki has your (and your wife's) loving support, which means more than anything else to her. I don't know who's luckier- you for having such a wonderful family willing to sacrifice for others or your family for having such a caring and supportive husband and father.

She's the same age as my daughter!
  • AustinRoth
We probably have even more in common than it seems at times. :-)
  • kathykattenburg
I have no doubt that's true.

    Dude -

You are making me blush! (and making some like SteveK and Jim Satterfield puke!!!)

Thanks for the sentiments, though. We are far from perfect parents; I particularly am hard to live with (being raised by a bi-polar Dad had its own set of unique challenges for my kids).

But as you said, love them unconditionally, be there to provide advice and suggestions without controlling their lives, and support their life choices even if they are not what you would prefer, and you do end up with a lot of love and respect back and forth.

BTW - one other key. Finding a partner that can tolerate you without tolerating your negative side, and who helps you grow as a person throughout your life together. I was a seriously screwed up young man, and I would be nothing today without my wife and her family's support. Meeting and marrying her is my luck and big break in life.

AR, well... as far as some of your views go.... you just need to agree with me more! But I understand that no one's perfect. ;) Thanks and take care.
