You know, we could simply pull out and let Afghanistan destabilize and fall into yet another round of civil warfare. That's what we're best known for in that part of the country. Then, in another ten years, we could wonder anew why they hate us.

David, Friedman is probably just a shifting barometer of Democratic, especially left or dominant Democratic, politics. He's somewhere between hack Paul Krugman and vapid Maureen Dowd insofar as actual substance is concerned (not that Krugman is of any higher quality, just quantity, sometimes).

I mentioned two individuals on two other threads you already started -- the best debate currently about Afghanistan is probably between Stephen Biddle (who's impressive if you listen to as well as read him), who ironically comes across as an academic Democrat though he is in the "pro" intervention camp, and his boss, Richard Haass, who's in the "anti" intervention camp (who views Pakistan as important instead).
