Don't confuse “libertarian” with “liberal” and even “radical” or “anarchistic” or “immature,” and in fact this is a moot point, anyway, because hype over or about “social conservatives” is unmerited.

That younger voters are a key to the political future is evident, even as our population ages. Youth are the replenishing, new voters each year, typically liberal, naive, and idealistic to a fault; this has been exploited for ages by the Left, and will continue to be so. (“Young voters” is the shorthand for Carville's claim that the Democrats may expect an advantage and realize a continued political superiority for at least another generation, which stands to reason will especially be so in the federal government.) It won't be at least for another ten to twenty years that the fiscal problems of government (not limited to Washington) will result in increasing tension between younger taxpayers and elderly retirement welfare program beneficiaries. (That, rather than the conservative trend to be expected as society ages and becomes more wise someday, should be what presents itself actually as a Republican and conservative opportunity to become a stronger opposition to and brake upon the ever-growing federal government and associated mammoth welfare state.)

I'm not persuaded that specifically the 3-way races in NY and NJ offer compelling proof of your thesis. If the 3rd party candidate was to the left of the Dems in this race, I guess you would have to be writing the same critique of the Dem party.

Yes, it's a good article full of much practical wisdom. But purists are purists for a reason. They do not tolerate dissention. Those who are open to rational discourse will applaud you Patrick, but those who need to hear have their ears covered and their minds closed.

You're right, you sure don't grow the party by purging it. If the Repubs weren't so fractured, lost and flailing about like a decapitated octopus and had some decent leadership and direction there is always the chance they could form a new Conservative Coalition with the moderate and conservative Dems who seem a bit nervous about just how far left the liberals agenda seems to be going. It worked in 1937 but without a well organized and well lead Repub party right now that ain't going to happen.
