‘Live American Shields’ are Better than Bush’s Missile Defense System: Dziennik, Poland

Consolation prize?: Vice President Joe Biden and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw, Oct. 21.

Has America agreed to station U.S. forces in Poland to ease the pain of canceling the construction of elements of an anti-missile shield in that country?

In addition to discussing the new version of the U.S. anti-missile shield with its East European allies, according to this article by Andrzej Talaga of Poland’s Dziennik newspaper, an agreement is likely to be signed involving the construction of a small U.S. Army base in that country.

For Dziennik, Andrzej Talaga writes in part:

“It seems that even before Vice President Biden’s visit [Oct. 20], an agreement will be signed on stationing U.S. Army troops in Poland. … NATO is no longer on a hair trigger. Rather, it is a well-oiled rifle in a box that is nailed shut. Who knows whether it will go off at all? So it pays to have the Americans on our soil. Let the potential aggressor know that an attack on Poland would incur the wrath of the most powerful nation in the world.”

Poland – Dziennik – Original Article (Polish)

It seems that even before Vice President Biden’s visit [Oct. 20], an agreement will be signed on stationing U.S. Army troops in Poland. The document will open the way for the construction of an American base here. Even if small, it will improve our security. An attack on the Polish Republic will automatically engage the U.S., which means poor prospects for the aggressor.

The missile defense system did not work. It had only a small success percentage. It never would have defended Poland.

    Waste of money.

Why do we need troops in Poland? What is the point?
