Yes I agree it's frustrating and a bit disingenuous to praise their noble actions when you disagree with the entire premise for the war. Especially since, in the end, the reasons for these various wars seem to always turn out to be horse crap. So the young go and volunteer, which dilutes one’s complaint verses the draftee that had no choice. Yet the tragedy is the same. What to do about it becomes more confused.

Remembering the VA hospital in San Francisco, full of Vietnam vets, it was quite the horrible place. One thing to die of your wounds, quite another to die alone in that hell. Many did. Maybe things are better now.

"And thank you for, in your Editor’s Note, encouraging all of us to support and honor our brave warriors."

I'm not sure how I am supposed to react to this statement.

Last year, I saw something I never thought I would see again in my lifetime, a double amputee below the waist going into a Target store. Growing up, I saw quite a few of them, from Korea and then Vietnam. Bouncing Betties and Booby Traps is what they were called instead of IEDs.

My mother explained what happened to them to me and as I got older the amputees became more plentiful. Then the number fell off. Surely, we wouldn't get involved in this type of thing again, I thought. We don't need any more people like that.

But I guess I was wrong. Nobody I knew thought it was heroic to get your legs blown off. It was just what happened when you did what you were supposed to do.
