President Bush: Graceful Invitation to President Obama

MSM often plays the same chord way too often: the dischord. There are far more stories each day that unfold with regard, and often enough, authentic fondness. A colleague from Texas A&M forwarded me a copy of this letter today, from the former President Bush speaking about welcoming President Obama to a special event on Aggie turf. You’ll probably note a couple pointed words indicating President Bush’s stance on Obama being President.

To My Fellow Members of the Texas A&M Family:

Howdy! As you have probably heard, I have invited the 44th President of
the United States of America to come visit the Bush Library and Texas
A&M, and President Obama has graciously accepted.

Along with the administration, faculty, and so many of you, I am honored
that The President, our President, is taking the time and making the
effort to come to College Station on October 16th to talk about an issue
that unites all Americans – namely, community service and its vast
importance to our continued well-being as a Nation. Our country still
faces many tough challenges, and the message that will come out of our
Presidential Forum on Service, I hope, is that every American regardless
of age has an important part to play in helping us overcome the
obstacles to our common progress.

This is not about politics. This is about the importance of service to
our communities and our country.

It would be hard to imagine a more deserving college campus to host a
Presidential Forum on volunteerism and community service than Texas A&M
- which is, after all, a school steeped in a rich tradition of service.
That’s why I am so proud to have our Bush Library and Museum and Bush
School of Government and Public Service here, and I cannot wait for
President Obama to experience the open, decent and welcoming Aggie
spirit for himself.

This will be an important national moment, and a moment for Texas A&M to
shine in the global spotlight as it always does. I sincerely hope and
believe it will serve as a point of Aggie pride for many years to come.

Gig ‘em!
George Bush (#41)

______
CODA
“Gig ‘em”… well, it’s the Aggie cry at sporting events. Being an honorary Aggie myself (having rec’d an award from Texas A & M that was accompanied by a public initiation onstage which included indoctrination about how to bellow ‘gig ‘em’ in the precise tone and posture required…

Apparently in the 1930s, the Aggies were going to play a football game against Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. ‘Gig ‘em’ is said to refer to hunting frogs with a piercing stick. There is a hand signal that goes with the ‘Gig ‘em’ shout too, the exact torque and position of same… also formally required to be mastered by those being added to the Aggie family.

    Hi dr. e.

First. congratulations on being an honorary Aggie.

Second, thank you for explaining the "gig 'em" Aggie cry. As an Aggie, I have to admit I had not heard that one.

A&M has many interesting, nice tradiditons. One of the nicest is getting to stand up during the entire football game (well, that one is not the nicest one), and kissing your wife or girl friend every time the team scores.

    Thanks again,

    Dorian

Oh what a grand idea. I remember the last time a young and controversial president hated by the establishment underground was [sweetly] invited to Texas...actually that's not exactly true, it happened the year before I was born but boy was it in the news since then! I always get a shudder too when I notice they're counseling Michelle to dress like Jackie with the tailored midrifts, pillbox hats, half jackets and so on....

If our politicians could be as cordial to one another while they are in office as they are after they leave.......oops, there I go daydreaming again.

Sometimes paranoia can be helpful in small doses..

I ponder on how easy it would be to blame it on "some random copycat shooter" "a tragedy" yadda yadda. I don't think this president should be within three states proximity to Texas during his entire presidency. The governor there is trying to rig execution-stays in favor of innocent-kills fer crissakes.. And isn't he, besides the FBI/CIA, the one who would ultimately wield the pressure for outcomes of any subsequent investigations? And it's clear that this administration's grip on the those other agencies is a bit slippery.

If I was sitting at Obama's right hand I'd caution him away from that engagement. Flatly I'd grab him by the arm and not let him go. The State of Texas sucks and has all but declared itself an enemy of the Union. It's the birthplace of some of the shadiest politicians and is chock full of powerful oilmen whose opinions and regard for our president hovers somewhere just above their warmth for a coyote that has just killed their prize calf.

    I dunno...

    Sil -

Texas has some really, really wonderful people, among the warmest and friendliest you'll find anywhere. There are great traditions and fabulous places to see and visit. I recommend Austin and the River Walk in San Antonio. Take in a Texas barbecue. Go to a country/western bar, have a cold one (or two) and let one of the locals teach you the two step.

Perry might be a dipstick, but Texas and its people are ok and then some.

I must say I am flummoxed by both the previous and the current president. I am not sure why this is even interesting. I wonder too if it is merely a matter of respect and custom, or if 'Bama will be holding his nose when he attends. The cordiality between these two men sickened me right from the beginning. I feel dizzy, must lean out over the balcony in case I have to heave. I am having an olfactory day dream and the smell is crinkling my nose. I better disappear rather than trample on anyone's tulips.

Sil, I would recommend you take a much broader view of Texas, as it is a enormous and diverse state. I was born and raised in New York, but come from three generations of Texans (I am the only member of my family not born in the Lonestar state).

Dallas and north Texas, it substantially different than Houston, which is different that West Texas, and the panhandle is a whole different world. And Austin is truly one of my favorite places in the U.S. Wonderfully weird as they like to say.

Yes, Perry's rhetoric has been over the top, but the state is much more than that. Guessing you are on the other side of the aisle than Perry and Bush, keep in mind its also the home state of Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower and Lyndon Johnson.

As long as she wears a tinfoil hat she will have nothing to worry about I'm sure, why don't you make a loner of yours? =D

Sil, you need to visit Austin, at least. You will find it to be an oasis -- complete with water, trees, government, modernity, and liberals.
  • Anna
Not sure if you noticed, but the Bush that authored the letter was Bush the Elder (#41) and not the more recent former President Bush.
  • spirasol
Thanks for pointing that out Anna. You're right, I missed that which
negates my comments. Now let me go back to hiding behind the bush.
