John Cole nailed it. Interesting society we live in, those who contribute so little, and are in effect parasites, are doing nicely, while those who actually do useful work (even if janitorial) are struggling to get by. Of course we've brought this on ourselves through our own twisted and foolish priorities. Greed and ignorance have brought us to this juncture.

Wall Street pays so much because of the spending and investment practices of Americans. They go hand in hand.

It could be worse.

a) We could have the current stupid obscession with Twitter, Facebook, etc, during the earlier bubble.

b) Regarding that earlier bubble (I joked at the time to a friend that we ought to start a new mutual fund, called the "Icarus Fund"), back then, while many weren't necessarily preoccupied with working on, or for, Wall Street, there were plenty of people enamored of day trading. I guess there's a more glamorous and more remunerative role for some day traders, still as "real" traders on Wall Street itself.
