I have not spoken ill of Nixon's 35 years ago health care proposal, but certainly there are no voices on the right currently, who are willing to take on the insurance industry and its crippling costs. With or without reform, private health insurance will double inside of 10 years. Double. Most employers will not be able to afford that, nor those in the individual market. There is no doubt that it hurts American businesses of all sizes and American wage earners. The status quo hurts small business and independent entrepreneurs the most. These are the facts.

You will recall that the Republicans were awake in 1974 (I know, ancient history) when a Health care reform bill was proposed and Ted Kennedy was subsequently quoted as having regretted not compromising and accepting it (yes there were other factors at play, and it was only a proposal at the time).<br>WTF back to you.

WTF is Collins talking about? Small businesses are HURT by the current system, because their insurance pools are too small to match the big boys. Those with big-company TAX DEDUCTIBLE insurance are getting a handout; a freebie, a form of WELFARE from ME, and everyone else who has to buy insurance individually. The current system is devastating to businesses of all sizes. Remember that there is more insurance cost in a new car than the cost of steel. The GOP needs to wake up to the fact that in a globalized market, we can't compete when an American car contains an extra $2,000 in payments to the insurance industry, 30% of which is paid for by a TAX INCREASE on small business. That's right, we small businesses pay extra taxes, as do our employees, to subsidize employees of GM, IBM, Microsoft and Haliburton.

What it does is stymie the far-left. Now that a couple GOP Senators are publiclly expressing some willingness, the moderate democrats have their hand strengthened.

It could be worse. Rather than mere speculation that it might be political cover, some could be asking this question as a rhetorical device for expressing hope for it.
