And I like your take on the perception bind that moderates are caught in. As a prolifer who voted for Obama, I've got my pro-life friends insisting that I am not truly pro-life; and my liberal friends don't know what to make of me. It's as if our minds have hardened to the point where we cannot accept anything but a black-and-white stance on any issue. I think that's what so many of us admire about our president – he's willing to wade out there into the murky middle and try to address issues without oversimplifying them.

I agree with this. Liberals should do the same, and stop demonizing democratic moderates….

I think his numbers have more problems than he would think. I vote for Dems but if asked tag myself as a conservative. I am a conservative new deal democrat. I also believe in cutting spending but not shifting spending from public programs to military programs due to my conservative values. I also do not believe in cutting taxes before cutting spending, again this makes me conservative. Many people I know call themselves conservative but vote to the left. When I think “liberal” I think free trade and de-regulated markets, again I am not a fan which makes me again call myself a conservative. I would not say I am in the main stream but I would note that the word “conservative” in the US is a very muddy and hard to define term.
