The Noble Prizes are given out each year, even if truly qualified candidates aren't worthy that year. Maybe Obamama is a mediocre pick in a year when nobody stood out. Some winners for literature are winners, even though their work is just a bit better than pulp fiction...

My many European and Asian friends and acquaintances (regular people all, not pundits or luminaries) believe that Obama has made a tremendous difference in his short time on the national stage. All have a predilection toward thinking kindly of the US, but have been hard-pressed in the past several years. They've had an uneasy sense of the world drifting into world war due to the bellicosity of our former administration. They have a great sense of relief now that Obama is in office. No, it's not because they believe he or anybody can solve all the world's problems, thereby ensuring peace. What they express is more that the seemingly inevitable slide toward world war has been stopped. Sort of similar to what many in the US seem to believe about the economy. Not that it's fixed, not at all. Indeed it may never be fixed to our satisfaction. World realities may be intractable. But, the panic and sense of the inevitable destruction of our lifestyle has eased, and it seems that we may be adjusting to a new, less spendthrift lifestyle.

Nothing noble, indeed, about this year's PC political statement again. You got your English right.

It might merit a new snicker or two: this year, it formally is the Hope and Change (not achievement) award.
