I doubt it was a consolation prize for failing to lobby successfully for Chicago 2016.

And, it wasn't merely a reward by the PC-BS Committee for being the celebrity rock-star darling Idol of the Year (that award for Obama is reserved later this year, by Time Lite.) No, the reference to “nuclear-free” stuff (at the least, naive and silly; at the worst, ugly and sinister) was more like how Obama met their anti-Bush and related PC-BS generalist criteria this year for this PC celebrity award.

It's noteworthy that most people on the airwaves have either scoffed at it or are puzzled, and even embarrassed and confused. (This honestly may have been President Obama's reaction to the award, too.) Notably, they've frequently gone on promptly not to dwell long on this silliness but on important issues, like health care and Afghanistan, which are important, and much more important than this PC anti-Bush award.

The opportunity is the global platform. While many in the U.S. (and elsewhere for that matter) have become dismissive about the Peace prize, it is still respected in many areas in the world. The President can use Nobel Prize to continue to strengthen the country's position as a leader in international diplomacy and human rights (an area where we have suffered significantly in global perception).

And my other joke for the day is-I can prove Obama is no Hitler, Hitler got the Olympics but not the Nobel Prize. So Obama must be the anti-Hitler.

Opportunity for the US? How so? It's not like Obama needs the money. Someone like Sima Samar is not only more deserving of the recognition, but it would help her do more than she already has.

I hope to the President accept gracefully, acknowledges how little has been done and how much still needs to be done to improve conditions for peace, and then use the global platform to U.S. leadership in the promotion peace and human rights and continue to re-position our nation as a admirable world leader. I also hope he takes Sima Samar (who is a more deserved winner, IMHO) and moved the discussion of human rights in Afghanistan to a more prominent place (and perhaps stirring greater international support for the U.S. effort there).

But it also reflects the truth of the matter which is why Obama should accept it. The day the CIA allowed bombing in Bagdhad just before Obama's arrival there last April sealed it for me. Obama not only stood in the face of “our enemies” and extended a firm hand of peace, but he also stood against far worse: the enemies of democracy within our own nation.

You're right on both counts. Obama should pass on this and yes, the pundits have a new football to roll in the mud with. Care to set up a pool for the number of news cycles this story eats? By the time Rush, fox, and O'reilly get done, my bet is 8.

I may not have agreed with Carter's Nobel either, but the man did help negotiate real, tangible peace accords, whether they held up or not.

What tangible accomplishments can be listed for Obama to have won this Nobel at this time?

Is the Nobel Peace prize to now be reduced to nothing more than a flavor of the moment award for pacifism?

We don't agree on much DQ but we agree on this. Obama got the Nobel Prize because he's not George Bush, and that was enough reason for the Nobel Committee.
