Police Crack Down On Babysitters

Here’s the picture, a stay at home mom offers to help out her neighbors by keeping an eye on their kids for the 15-40 minutes between when the parents head to work and the school bus arrives. The kids are all friends, the mom is just trying to be a good neighbor.

Well according to the state of Michigan she’s a lawbreaker, illegally operating a day care. The fact that she seems to do it for free and only for a little while in the morning doesn’t seem to matter. Nor does the fact that all of the parents are fine with it. The state is gonna make sure she goes through thousands of dollars of costs to get licensed.

Luckily it seems the outrage has led to support for a bill to exempt these kinds of situations, but talk about government going overboard.

"...a bill to exempt these kinds of situations" ?

A shame it's not possible to legislate common sense.

Wouldn't it be great if Michigan police actually focused on stopping REAL crime? It sounds like somebody has too much time on their hands.

Great except it wasn't the police it was the Dept of Human Services and they just wrote a letter and here is the kicker it was in response to a complaint.
  • My guess on the complaint is it was either Gladys Kravitz, or more likely a day care operator who was ticked they didn't get paid to watch those kids.

I agree; this is absurd. Outlawing neighborliness and simple kindness. Good post, Patrick.

The solution is free day care, which is a human right.
  • No, how about the private option? You guys are outrage challenged. Check this out.

So what about grandparents who watch their grandkids while the parents are at work?

Speaking of which... didn't Michelle Obama's mother help watch their kids when she and Barack were on the campaign trail. Maybe Illinois has different laws. Or maybe it's just more friendly. :)

Anyway, this story is ridiculous. I think it's safe to say that the complainer is not one of the parents who benefited from the mother's neighborliness. Maybe the complainer was a jealous neighbor who DOES have to pay for daycare.
