I passed a project with a big sign saying that it had been funded by stimulus money (using the official name of the act

I wonder how many tax dollars have been spend on those "Lets pat ourselves on the back" signs

On this trip I’m using a book.

Probably an upgrade. If non fiction a book can tell you more about an issue than a newspaper article and if you want bits and pieces you got the internet. or cable news shows. Of course if you have a birdcage a newspaper will serve better.

On the bright side for you newspaper sentimentalists, just think of how many trees are being saved.

Hi Joe:

"In some towns you can see businesses that have closed due to the recession"

Driving through some little towns in Texas, even before the recesssion, you could see that almost the whole town has closed down. Have not been out "into the country" since the recession took hold, but I imagine it's much worse now.

Sounds like you have your traveling cut out. Travel safely.

Talking about newspapers, especially USA Today, I also love that newspaper; they have published over a dozen of my letters, but that's not the only reason. When you are traveling, especially overseas, it sometimes seems like the tether that keeps you tied to home. Plus, at most hotels you can get it free, and that's a dollar saved each day these days.

Little anecdote: One morning, in my hometown, for some reason all of the vending machines were sold out of USA Today. There happened to be a hotel nearby and, knowing that that hotel brand always carried USA today for its guests I stepped up to the reception desk and pointing to the stack of USA Todays, I said, can I buy one, please. The clerk said, please take one, they are free. I wasn't going to argue with him.

To this day, I don't know whether the clerk thought I was staying at the hotel, or whether he was just feeling sorry for me. Good issue to send in to "The Ethicist" at the NYT Sunday magazine.

Dorian

My parents get the Charlotte Observer, or as Rush Limbaugh used to call it when he was still funny and not just a partisan hack, the Charlotte Disturber. But about the only thing disturbing is how thin it has gotten!

Joe
The one thing that contributed to the demise of many newspapers was the leveraged buyout and that is rarely mentioned. Many papers that were not saddled with debt as a result of leveraged buyouts are surviving. The same can be said for other businesses that were also victims.

Some of us (who still can and like to read) will continue to enjoy books and newspapers. (We read for information on the Internet as well.)

I find USA Today to be a "fast food" newspaper, but (as with ESPN, in its own way, and I can say this even as not a big sports fan) it certainly has found its niche among the public. The colored weather map at USA Today is a staple of travelers even if they don't read the rest of the newspaper, ordinarily.
