My husband's family is in Pittsburgh. When we were dating in the late '70's (yes I am dating myself) I hated going there to visit. Elrod's description only scratches the surface of how bad Pittsburgh was in the dying days of the steel industry. The changes that have been made over the last 3 decades are nothing short of astonishing and when we were forced to leave Minnesota due to jobs, we seriously considered moving back to Pittsburgh.

It's not the capital of Appalachia any more than cities in Upstate New York are which are in the region (and in fact, even inside the ARC delineated region).

C'mon now, Elrod. Have you traveled through the area? The city with the claim to that fame is none other than Charleston, West Virginia (which happens to also be situated well to be a capital for the entire eastern USA, if the East ever split from the West).
