Obama made a very smart decision, when he chose to hold onto Sec Gates, who is everything that Rumsfeld was not– a quiet achiever who gets it done regardless of the politics involved. I'm doubtful that Obama would have had the credibility to make these huge changes without Gates' involvement. Gates is one Republican who really puts country first.

Great piece Dorian. One has to wonder if Gates stayed on the try to correct all that he saw as wrong, but was not allowed to address, under GWB.

Perhaps someday he will write a book. Something tells me it would be a must read.
