The best thing about public libraries is a due date. I read more when I know that the book must be back by a certain day, so the next patron can read it!

They are that, and in this economy they are more essential than ever. There are a LOT of people looking for jobs or looking to improve their skills, and also lots of people w/o computers at home, or w/o an Internet connection. Students do homework at the library, they use computers, the library is a place for them to go after school. I am lucky enough to have the main library in my town two blocks away from where I live. I'm there all the time, so I know how libraries are used and how important they are.

To me libraries are representative of opportunity and enlightenment. Of course they are public institutions, so there must be some evil associated with them - that I just haven't woken up to yet. ;-)
