Honestly Leo you and Polimom get all the cracks at my expense you need since you are usually the ones I am apologizing to, though I was waiting for a crack about my McCain/Ron Paul/Obama evolution since it sounds crazy even to me.

First off I tend to "debate" like I am wearing brass knuckles and I have a bad habit, as many here would note, of meaning a general "you" and not specifying that only to turn around and apologize afterward.

And all this time I thought it was the metal plate in your head that was setting off the metal detector.

Just kidding and in good nature MSF. =P

First off I tend to "debate" like I am wearing brass knuckles and I have a bad habit, as many here would note, of meaning a general "you" and not specifying that only to turn around and apologize afterward. I am actually a Ron Paul supporter that voted for Obama that also backed McCain in 2000(hows that for a political identity crises). I also agree with you but I tend to think that Carter is hearing the echoes of pre-1970 or so and much like many of those that lived through it see's racism and reverse racism everywhere because they are projecting it. I would also argue that that type of racism is the most common form left in the country BUT I desperately want the Repub party to slow down in their Rushisim and therefore I am fighting hard for them to avoid what I fear they are becoming which is the Dems of the 1970's that scared america away from them by being defined by their extremes. To me the fundies and birchers are those extremes but I was recently informed the fiscal paleocons and libertarians are actually the extreme minority and though it broke me to realize it I think DLS was right when he pointed it out to me. I am a child of the 80's, the echoes in my head are the echoes of the Southern Strategy and I tend to go right off a cliff when I smell even a whiff of it as you could probably tell from my meltdown above or in one of my other meltdowns on the other comment threads of similar topics at TMV.

not a question of self pity. not sure i understand your point. perhaps i am not clear; I didn't mean poor poor pitiful me (a white suburban old crank), just pointing out how commentary by politicians, etc frequently level a racism epithet to deflect from an argument. protest acorn: your called a racist -- disagree with the prez: your called a racist. disagree with a health insurance bill: your called a racist. etc etc. show me i'm wrong. and yes, "the right" has similar personal attack methods (just as wrong headed). Ad hominem arguments are the last resort of the incompetent. i watch hear and read few arguments of substance. just slight of hand personal attacks. I couldn't care less if someone calls me a racist any more than I cared that anyone called me a communist (i'm a child of the "60's"). I just fail to see how personal attacks and deflective slight of hand accusations support an argument. Jimmy Carter injected "race" into the rude interruption of the Presidents Speech, etc.; Acorn has pronounced attacks upon it as racism. what does racism have to do with a health care bill? what does racism have to do with corruption? what does racism have to do with being a rude jackass in congress or on mtv? my point is: explain don't defame.

and just to confound and annoy as many people as possible: I am a former democrat turned republican who voted FOR Barak Obama who is against Gov't run (regulation is something different) health care, support a womans right to choose -- as goes the cliche -- is against oppressive taxation is in favor of more regulation of "wall street" believes the individual is more important than the group, supports freedom of speech {don't believe hate speech should be a crime -- go ahead, call me a fat wop faggot loving jew -- i dont care --, but that laws against harassment should be stringently enforced).

i am overweight. i have italian austrian (jew) czech ancestry, though straight have no issue with homosexuals. I've had (and supported) a female boss -- younger than myself, had and supported and argued with a 'black' supervisor, have supervised 'black and hispanic' workers and probably learned more from them than they from me. I do not believe in conspiracy theories but acknowledge group and peer behavior -- good and bad.

I'm just disgusted intellectually when people intend to deflect an argument with personal attacks such as but not limited to racism, sexism, pinheadism, and any other popular isms of the day.

Actually thats not the case but if you wish to believe it and pity yourself you are free to do so. A name even exists for it, its called identity politics and the right openly mocked the left for it until 2008 when they decided they wanted to be the identity politics party. This is more a case of lay down with dogs and wake up with fleas. Its a tiny minority but crying the blues instead of taking care of business and letting them know they are hurting the party is the whiners way out. For instance why do lefty blogs police racist comments so heavily while RedState does not?(they may now I have not checked in a few months) Like it or not those things count and if you want to protest, fine but know who you are protesting with or you will get marginalized just like the anti-war types truthers or birthers. In fact they are so toxic to the left that it tanked Van Jones which the right applauded all while a large amount of their elected officials buy into the birther and other such nonsense. Unless the public begins to buy into the conspiracy theories I see a large swath of toxic people on the right that a future Repub admin will not be able to touch.

Apparently anyone [white male, specifically] of European descent {Mexicans, etc excepted} critical of anyone not of European Descent is without equivocation racist. No argument is legit; any argument is tainted. Truth and facts are not important; opinion is not allowed. Follow the party line or be sent to the fire: dissension against 'the left' (whatever that is) is witchcraft.

"the Repubs are not acting as racists"

Nor is criticism of the New York state government in Albany, etc., "racist" [sic].

It's just the handiest excuse to mischarcterize the public (as well as the GOP) right now by the resentful, given how the lib Dems have alienated the public and engineered their own destruction in overreaching on health care. (Hopefully this causes Senate second-guessing of the idiotic House climate legislation, etc., too, and other House excesses.)

When they're not attacking Limbaugh, Beck, whichever righty celeb is next, etc., it's "racism" [sic].

Anything but admitting they're wrong and that they're failing. That's expecting too much of them.

Because only racists see racism, I see what you did there. Its a childish fallacy but I do see what you did. Racism exists, its a problem. Race baiting is when you call someone a racist with no cause but also when you constantly go right up the the bigot line and then pull back just at the last moment and call it "satire."

Both sides race bait to some extent but the right is winning awards for it at this time and are saying and doing things that pre-Obama would have been tagged racist without question and then hiding behind "but the president is black", not that they voted for him but the president being black fixes all of our past racial sins didnt ya know. By that calculation I never want to hear about anti-christian or anti-fundie talk because W. was president so no bias can exist anywhere in this country.

When this debate began I sided with those that felt the racists were a minority, now I am becoming more and more comfortable painting the entire party with a very bright red bigot brush. Why? The strategies and talking points chosen remind me of the cries of "reverse racism" of the 80's by those that actively ignored actual cases of racism. Carter spoke a bit to bluntly and he also should have used a MUCH smaller brush but I am beginning to be reminded of the type of seething hatred of the right I had in my childhood and this strategy being used to discredit the charges of racism is the only common link since its the same one I have seen my entire life. It goes away and I forget it, while its around I want to hunt down people to pick fist fights with that use it.
To recap the Repubs are not acting as racists, they have a minority of vocal racists in their party that are making them look bad. The reason they are looking bad is that they are courting these votes via race baiting which they and now the congressional black caucus seem to be doing. The difference is that most of those members I feel pity for since they lived through things that messed with the way they view the world, unamerican things, horrible things, things that were done by men that look and sound just like many of those on the right that are actively race baiting. The race baiters in the Repub party do not have this excuse, and they are doing it purely for political gain.

If you see race baiters or racists everywhere please take a moment and think hard about how you feel about people of other races, if your mind jumps to a stereotype of that race you have some work to do. If your mind jumps to how that group has held you or the nation back or you or your people down, you have some work to do. "Those people" who ever they may be are not the problem, we are. Everyone of us that has ever listened to a racist joke without comment and everyone of us that do not vocally tell both sides race baiters to sit down and shut up or in the case of our older americans that cant really help it, just ignore them.

When this debate began I sided with those that felt the racists were a minority, now I am becoming more and more comfortable painting the entire party with a very bright red bigot brush. Why? The strategies and talking points chosen remind me of the cries of “reverse racism” of the 80's by those that actively ignored actual cases of racism.

“Those people” who ever they may be are not the problem, we are. Everyone of us that has ever listened to a racist joke without comment and everyone of us that do not vocally tell both sides race baiters to sit down and shut up or in the case of our older americans that cant really help it, just ignore them.
