The Blue vs. Red warfare is without foundation. Even those who wanted to secede after Bush was elected and (sometimes) join Canada couldn't even identify which states, specifically, and needed this explained to them — along with territorial division likely in those states as well as Blue (Canadian) assumption of so much of the US federal debt, et cetera. (No painless Blue fantasy!)

The magic combination of tenther's, budget deficits, water shortages and high energy prices will bring back real federalism which will kill this country. Sooner or later the Blue States are going to get tired of paying the bills and being abused by the Red States. Sooner or later the Southwest is going to run out of water, and when they start some new project to steal water from the Northwest or the Great Lakes, they are going to be told by the locals to go f**k themselves.

It's only a matter of time before the whole place falls apart.

Slate can't be trusted to do a “thought experiment,” given its competence with thought. Too silly.

It's an interesting subject (as I've written, having North America become four to six, or more, nations), especially if it's considered based on real-world experience, but not necessarily “reviewed” as on Slate.

I have yet to see a nuclear powered frieght train or electric powered airliner. They already tried a nuclear powered cargo ship, the SS Savanna, and, it didn't work out.

However, the third world is already kaput. That's why it's called the third world.

How often Peak Oil appears at the top makes me realize how many stupid people are in this country.

13. Peak Oil: Petroleum production reaches terminal decline. Oil becomes too expensive to extract, and alternative energies can't maintain our fossil-fuel-dependent lifestyle. The developed world goes kaput, with gas-happy America leading the way to the gutter.
