How interesting you should bring this historical incident up just now, elrod. Day before yesterday, I had never heard of Preston Brooks or the caning of Charles Sumner. (I *had* heard of Sumner and that he was an abolitionist.) But last night I was reading this new book I've taken out of the library -- it's literally new, not just new to me. It was published in 2009. It's by Adam Gopnik, and it's called Angels and Ashes: A Short Book About Darwin, Lincoln, and Modern Life. I won't go into a whole book report or review here, but your post here struck me because the chapter I was reading last night was about Lincoln (the chapters alternate between Lincoln and Darwin), and the author described the near-fatal beating of Charles Sumner in great detail. It's a nice little coincidence, therefore, that you should write about that incident today.

--[as an affront to his honor and defended it as all honor-laden men do: with violence]--

This is subjective opinion, not fact. There are many forms of preserving one's honor besides violence.

Finally, someone who recalls history and isn't simply HUA and bottom-feeding as usual about Wilson.

Good job, Elrod.

And the town hell theme and behaviors lemon-picked to mischaracterize the public is there, as I also noted earlier -- the shouting by Wilson but also the one or two signs held up and waving the legislation the Republicans have written that the Democrats are deliberately snubbing (along with the Republicans).

Historical corrections: Preston Brooks was a representative, not a senator. He was defending the honor of his cousin, Senator Andrew Butler of South Carolina. And Brown's massacre took place at Pottawatomie Creek, not Ossawatomie.
Otherwise, good points Elrod.
