It appears Ezra Klein is not the only Progressive-inclined pundit who has semi-nice things to say about Sen. Baucus’ proposal.
Here’s Matt Yglesias, via Andrew Sullivan:
The status quo in the United States is really bad. Baucus’ plan would make it better.
That line and this one from Yglesias — “even in its meager Baucusish form, the health reform currently on the table would be the biggest piece of progressive social policy in decades” — sound so much like Klein’s bottom line that it further boosts the suspicion (voiced earlier) that a coordinated Progressive retrenchment might be afoot.

When Baucus supports single payer, then I will pay attention to anything he says. Til then, I will continue to toss his sorry ass into the “corrupt politician that is a disgrace to the state that elected him” bin.
The final legislation will be “left of Baucus.” It'll either be the House bill shifted rightward, or the Baucus bill shifted leftward (once it goes to the House, especially). Obama's speech listed goals that put the Dems in that position, and the Republicans are effectively out of the picture altogether.
