I think Ike realized that we could not win in Korea against China and the Soviet Union had we escalated against the Chinese incursion. Nuclear war would have certainly ensued. We face no nuclear threat in Afghanistan, but can we win against this insurgency without destroying to many civilians, or breaking the bank?

I don’t know. Depends on how important it is for us to win.

If NATO leaves Afghanistan now, the Taliban and their repressive measures will be back in-place. Would you like to be a girl or woman living in Kabul right now, with that prospect in-mind?

Gosh, Redbus, what do you imagine it's like to be a girl or a woman anywhere in Afghanistan right now? And in some ways with the U.S. military's help! (i.e., handing out Viagra to Afghan tribal leaders to get their cooperation.

Ideally we leave after having accomplished (and Obama achieving and being associated with) something substantial (you know, like what you libbies want Obama to do, for a Change [tm], in particular with health care currently).

I wish we could precisely identify the enemy and channel it into a controllable area in the frontier zone between Afghanistan and Pakistan, herd and direct all the enemy into a known place, then do whatever we want to destroy the enemy completely or contain it. (The same is true for “area denial” by mines or by chemicals along the frontier between the two named nations, if we chose to do this. Better would be to channel the enemy into an ideal one-shot kill zone, then dispatch them promptly)

The war on terror has always been in Afghanistan. It is only out of control in Afghanistan because the Bush administration took the war to Iraq. Obama has said all along the fight is in Afghanistan and has made no bones about that. I agree with him. We have to stay and fight in Afghanistan. We have to try to take down al qaida and the taliban, even if it means going into Pakistan.

No, there is a greater international consensus for the value of what the U.S. and Europe (via NATO) is doing in Afghanistan than there ever was for our far less multi-lateral intervention in Iraq. So far, the U.S. has suffered 19 dead in Afghanistan. (I don't know the numbers for other NATO members). Compare that to the several thousand dead in Iraq, and we didn't give up then. To pull out of Afghanistan now would be akin to when former President Clinton pulled us out of Somalia, all for a dozen or so soldiers killed. Stay the course.
