I'm not really a 'power' user of cell phones and don't even have a smart phone at the moment but found the article interesting and informative, thank you.
One thing that I couldn't help noticing is how high AT&T's international rates seem compared to the prepaid phone I currently use. It's a Tracfone and the calls to over a hundred countries is the same rate as local calls. Not a very favorable comparison to AT&T, is it?

The behavior of the monopolies that control our internet bandwidth is deplorable.

Just like health care, we pay more for less than other "advanced nations" like Korea and India.

"American residents and businesses now pay two to three times as much for slower and poorer quality service than countries like South Korea or Japan. Since 2001, according to the International Telecommunications Union, the United States has fallen from fourth to 16th in the world in broadband penetration. Thomas Bleha recently argued in Foreign Affairs that what passes for broadband in the United States is "the slowest, most expensive and least reliable in the developed world." While about 60 percent of U.S. households do not subscribe to broadband because it is either unavailable where they live or they cannot afford it, most Japanese citizens can access a high-speed connection that's more than 10 times faster than what's available here for just $22 a month. (Japan is now rolling out ultra-high speed access at more than 500 times what the Federal Communications Commission considers to be "broadband" in this country.)"

Please, read the whole article here:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2006/...

The solution to the problem:

OpenMoko - Neo FreeRunner, open source linux based phone or get a phone that runs Android: Hardware products running Android

Apple makes beautiful products, but why anyone would buy a product that ties you to single vendor is something I don't understand.
