Mueller's posturing is particularly galling to those of us in Scotland who've followed the legal and political wranglings around the Lockerbie atrocity since it occurred, and have been convinced that a miscarriage of justice took place. Releasing Megrahi now is a fudge, but it's the closest to justice that's likely to come out of a cover-up that's spanned two decades.

It was Mueller who presided over "investigations" that left the local police forces as mere passive - if astonished and angered - observers while FBI and CIA operatives ran around the Scottish countryside contaminating the evidence chain, thereafter manipulated and forged evidence to order, and coached and bribed or attempted to bribe key witnesses.

It was concerted US pressure on the Scottish judiciary and the UK government that led to the formation of a trial setup which was at best a judicial compromise and at worst a prime example of a kangaroo court.

Successive UK and US administrations have sought to cover up the machinations that led to Megrahi's conviction, let alone the real events of that day when so many people died.

New evidence led the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission to order a second appeal. Megrahi wouldn't live to see that to fruition anyway, and it's not hard to see whose best interests are served by suppressing the evidence it would have considered - not least Mueller, and by association, the US administrations of the time and since, so spare us the misplaced invective and put your own house in order.

Joe, thanks for the link. The latest from the UK is that the New Labourites have pulled back from threatening a vote of no confidence since they've realised they'd lose it now that revelations of their part in setting the Scottish Executive up is rapidly coming to light. No Scottish government toppling to be done, apparently.

Regards, Steve

I think according to his religion he gets 70 virgins for his actions, not hell. Though 70 virgins might be a bit of hell in itself.

A WITNESS in the Lockerbie case has claimed he was offered $4 million (£2 million) by American investigators to lie to the trial judges.

Edwin Bollier, head of the Swiss company MEBO that was said to have manufactured the timer used to detonate the Pan Am bomb, claims he was offered the money by the FBI at its Washington HQ in exchange for making a statement that supported the main line of inquiry – that Libya was responsible for the bombing.

He has told Dr Hans Koechler, who was a UN observer during the trial of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi in the Netherlands, that he was offered a “new life” in the United States if he testified that the timer found in the plane wreckage had been supplied to Libya.

“I rejected this and said this could not possibly be the case,” he said. He added that there was a “loud dispute” after he rejected the offer.

The claim follows news that the Maltese shopkeeper Tony Gauci, whose evidence led to Megrahi's conviction, was offered $2 million by the CIA.
