Good News on the Mosquito Repellent Front

Better than DEET and less toxic, too:

A chemical that resembles natural products from black pepper can deter mosquitoes four times longer than DEET, the world’s most widely used bug repellent.

The new substance could be used to protect people who live in the developing world, or to shield soldiers from insects when they deploy to countries with pest problems.

“Our goal is to reduce disease transmission,” said USDA synthetic chemist Maia Tsikolia, here at the American Chemical Society meeting. “It’s very important for the American military, actually for mankind, to have effective repellents.”

Just in time:

The new repellent was discovered at just the right time. Earlier this month, a team of French researchers reported that DEET affects cells in a manner similar to nerve gas, and enhances the toxic effects of a common pesticide. Though the study was preliminary and may not be relevant for humans, it became fodder for dozens of cautionary headlines leaving the public looking for alternatives.

Yikes! I’ve been a carefree DEET user for years. Now they say it’s neurotoxic.

My daughter is very sensitive to mosquito bites (they swell up real big), and unfortunately mosquitoes are really drawn to her. The whole family goes out and sometimes nobody is bit but her - and ALL over her body. It's awful. I have tried everything that the anti-DEET crowd claims works and so far nothing has been even remotely effective except for sprays with a high percentage of DEET. When this alternative comes on the market I will try it, but I'll believe it when it works for her.

We have botanicals we can use for pest control in gardens, too.

And for you PC homeowners (and those refurbishing decrepit school buildings in St. Louis city, for example, and other buildings in places like that where kids and adults still suffer lead poisoning):

Not to mention this little automotive product:

That's not to say that to this day the overreaction to and crippling of DDT use, say, was a good thing. It wasn't and it cost many people their lives and caused enormous unnecessary suffering to so many more.

Just put things into their proper context, their proper place.

You can put mosquito repellent on me after I am dead.

You even wave a can of those noxious chemicals at me and I'll fit it where the sun don't shine on you.

"Better living through chemistry" is contaminating the gene pool at a very rapid rate.
