And then there is the other Heinlein book that was made into a disaster because of their idea of adapting it, The Puppet Masters.

They definitely don't have the fan base to persuade the money people that they would work, Jazz. There are many Heinlein books that could make for good movies, though since they were written in the late '40s and '50s they would need someone to write them who could update them while still showing respect for the source material. Have you read Double Star, Citizen of the Galaxy or The Door Into Summer?

After I did some more checking, it seems that there are *some* of what we would call "rights issues" regarding Ender's Game, but not the usual kind. Orson Scott Card has been very interested in seeing the film made and he still controls the rights. But he also issues a statement in 99 about how he wasn't going to "bend over for green screen Hollywood" and walked out of discussions. It seems that his vision of what it should be wasn't the same as what the money people wanted to do. Perhaps, with time ticking by, he may become more flexible. Thanks for the background on Heinlen, by the way. Another of my favorites and some of your choices would be great films if done well. If I could add to the list, I would also add his pairing of Methuselah's Children and Time Enough for Love.... even though it's such a massive story that it might have to be split up into three movies like Lord of the Rings was. Problem is, as wonderful as those books are, I don't think they have the built in fan base that Tolkien had.

A decent adaptation, complete with powersuits, of Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Speaking of Heinlein, I would really like to see adaptations of Tunnel in the Sky, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Have Spacesuit, Will Travel. I think these and others could be successfully updated.

I wonder if Ender's Game has rights issues? Late one night at a science fiction convention in L.A. about 11 years ago a similar discussion was taking place. I mentioned that Tunnel in the Sky was something I'd like to see and George R.R. Martin said that he agreed that it could make for a great visual story. He, however, was interested in turning it into a TV series but the legal rights were a hopelessly tangled mess. It's not that uncommon, as I understand it.
