Here are some quotes. Perhaps "unpatriotic" wasn't the actual word. "Emboldening our enemies," however, proved to be quite the popular catchphrase. To me, it's semantics, they're one in the same.

“The left has a disdain for the military... They’re dangerous... trying to undermine the will of the American people." Tom DeLay, 10/31/06

"It’s clear that the Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry wing of the Democratic Party has a visceral loathing for the American military and for, frankly, America as a country in the world. Their whole approach is to blame us for what, in fact, our enemies do... I think it tells you how deep the sickness is in the left wing of the Democratic Party.” Newt Gingrich, 11/1/06

"That’s your Party that undermines our troop morale and emboldens our enemies," Sean Hannity, 2/1/08.

"When you have Democrats saying it's time to get out, artificial timetables and saying that the Commander-in-Chief lied, distorted, hyped and misled the troops. Is that the thing to do during a time of war?" Sean Hannity, 12/2/05

As for "whining about Nazis and unAmerican activities," I believe Pelosi (if that's who you were referring to) wasn't calling anyone a Nazi. Although that interpretation was given by Rush Limbaugh, so well... It's a little obvious where the soundbites originated.

What she actually said was that folks were bringing swastikas to protests, which turned out to be true.

http://factcheck.org/2009/08/nazi-symbols-at-to...

I must have missed the quote where she called protesters "Un-American", and if she did in fact say that, she's wrong. Can anyone link me that quote, or is that just an interpretation of what she said?

As for protesting and Freedom of Speech... To be honest, I think this administration has handled it much better than the previous one, where folks were restricted to "Free Speech Zones" outside of the event. To me, that was real supression of free speech. At the same time, "free speech" does not protect acts of violence or threats of violence or inciting of riots, so I can understand why security might be needed. Granted, I feel like it would be more productive as an opponent of this health care reform to undermine through dialogue rather than shouting over someone so that they can't have a dialogue at all. One scenario makes you look like you're interested in getting the truth out, and the other makes you look like you're not interested in any discussion whatsoever and are only trying to be a disruption.

A few quotes:

"Think what it will mean if we elect a Democratic candidate who has committed himself to an antiwar posture in order to get his party's nomination. Our enemies will be certain that they are winning the war on the battleground that matters--American public opinion. So they will continue to kill Americans wherever and whenever they can, because it works. " Orson Scott Card, Wall Street Journal Dec. 2003

Sen. Rick Santorum on Thursday accused the news media and liberals of undermining support for the Iraq war at a time when, he said, Islamic fundamentalists pose a serious threat to national security.
"The challenge for liberty today, the challenge for our generation is the spread of Islamic fascism," said Santorum, the No. 3 Senate Republican. -Jan 14, 2006

"Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Sarah Palin, 2008

Because you aren't sitting there in the comfort of your house cruising the internet for a chance to get hyperbolic. You're in jail, you've been charged with a crime, you've been intimidated, your freedom of speech has been abridged...

Oh wait, none of that happened?

Right. Back in real life a couple politicians wrote an op-ed. Holy crap. World ending.

You would think us liberals would react differently after suffering through 8 years of Republicans calling us unpatriotic for opposing things like the Iraq War and waterboarding.

Who called you unpatriotic? I see this charge a lot, but somehow nobody ever has any quotes.

casual,
You are probably right that the Congress will pass something come hell or high water. The costs of passing nothing or "starting over" are a million times greater than passing a watered-down bill that squeaks through.

barbara,
What questions? And who's preventing you from asking questions? What Democrats are tired of is people screaming "Liar" and "Socialist", not the asking of hard questions. There's a difference.

It seems that the town halls have simmered down a bit as Congressmen know how to prepare for them. security is ready for trouble, and supporters of reform have showed up in force to keep the shouting to a standstill. It's possible that tough questions will actually get asked now and not drowned by fellow skeptics in a fit of righteous rage.

Hey, who can blame Rahm Emanuel for giving the greenlight to this public smackdown? After all, the Demcong and the lefty bloggers were given the ball to advance and they proceed to just start losing yardage on each down. The minions have lost control of the news cycle, have given up 15 points in the polls and inspire no confidence in holding the hill during the upcoming Miller time in the Vineyard. Emanuel had to step in and castigate the crew over the public criticism of the Blue Dogs just 2 days ago and now this whining about Nazis and unAmerican activities.

The boss needs a "W" before going into the real rough sledding ahead on immigration. Momentum is way more important than some policy details. Obama's agenda centerpiece needs to pass even if it amounts to giving flu shots at the free clinics.

Pelosi has demonstrated that she will wander off the ranch whenever the kitchen gets warm.

Watch for the boss to have a quiet word with the Blue Dogs and Harry Reid. A deal will be cut for the Blue Dog support and Harry will be told to toe the line and keep his mouth shut and use the Senate package to get the W before the end of the fall session.

I absolutely agree with Joe and the White House on this. I consider myself a liberal, but think there is no place in declaring your opponents Un-American just because they don't agree with your position. You would think us liberals would react differently after suffering through 8 years of Republicans calling us unpatriotic for opposing things like the Iraq War and waterboarding. Maybe its human nature to give back what they gave to us, but the best way to separate those who merely oppose or have questions about current reform (like barbaraross), and those who are just yelling to disrupt all communication, is to behave like adults, and let them behave like children.

Healthcare reform is a monumental issue we need to tackle as a nation, and until we can move beyond the petty yelling, and accusations of socialism, nazism, and being un-american, and onto exactly how we extend healthcare to every American in a way that bends that cost curve back down, we all lose. I applaud Obama for staying above the fray, despite the constant personal attacks and jabs.

I resent that because I have questions and have voted republican you call me a dumb arse. I continue to have unanswered questions, that I assume no one is able to answer. It is so obvious that you may not freely ask questions any more. Where is freedom?

The President might as well have agreed with her because what he said will carry no weight with these screaming idiots. These are the same tired old "commies coming over the hill" dumb arse rednecks that can't put two coherent sentences together. They listen to right wing wacko radio and TV news “entertainers”, get their stupid gonads up on issues rather than actually WORK to seek true answers. They are the preverbal “dumb arse” voters that the Republicans have been cultivating for two decades.

If you correlate every stupid arse argument they make from healthcare to defense funding/spending legislation, they crumble.

Dummies are easy pickens for corporate power brokers and their step’n fetch it republican party.
