This is a situation that must be investigated further. We'll just hope that this won't happen again since it really caused a lot of trouble, people get injured, more expenses. Something should be done with this.

Confining black and Latino and "Aryan Nation zealots" in the same cell? Wouldn't that be "white". Not all white prisoners are racists, nor is everyone else in a gang. Let's face it, everyone gets along better if they have more room. The way California treats its prisoners is unconstitutional, and a riot would have happened even without race under these brutal conditions.

I wonder if someone can sue the judges since an increase in prison violence should have been a foreseeable consequence of the decision.

I agree with shannonlee that the riots seem to be driven primarily by gangs, not race. I don't believe that the big story here is the desegregation (prison staff can't choose bunk mates primarily on race, but can obviously make choices based on racially affiliated gangs), but rather the overcrowded, underfunded prison system. When it comes to budget cuts, California voters would rather cut funds to prisons than to schools, which is a perfectly reasonable opinion. However, this leaves the prison system woefully unprepared to deal with inmate gang violence.

The long term solution is to confront gangs and violence on the streets by giving at-risk youth alternatives to joining a gang. Organizations like Homeboy Industries (documentary: http://explore.org/explore/losangeles/films/119 ) bring hope to some of L.A.'s toughest neighborhoods by providing ways for at-risk youth and former gang members to meaningfully contribute to their communities. Funding alternative opportunities for youth seems much cheaper than building more prisons and cleaning up after riots.

Anyone ever watch Lockdown on NatGeo? I think it's NatGeo...anyway...it seems to me that gangs, more than race, drive violence in our prison system. Even within certain races there are gang divides in prison. There are also gangs that are multiculti. Gangs are more apt to join together by race, but the gangs are the base in which all of this is driven.
