The force behind the divide is the people, because we have no good leadership on either side of the partisan divide. We have some good Congressmen, but not in leadership positions, because its the partisans who tend to get those. Replace Harry Reid with Evan Bayh and John Boener with Richard Lugar, for example, and you could start mending the fence.

I'm not convinced yet that President Obama will seek a 2nd term. Just a gut feeling right now. Hard to describe in detail.

A 2010 Republican majority COULD help President Obama but like ChrisWWW said, the middle ground between the two political color gangs seems to be non-existent.

A GOP House would be the best thing for the country, and in turn probably for Obama. When one party controls the house, senate and presidency it generally doesn't turn out very well.

I don't think the GOP is strong enough to take back the House in 2010 though. They need to find an identity and leaders that aren't just based on opposition, but in finding a platform that can draw broad support.

Jazz,
The answer to your post's title is No.

Obama ran and won on a number of pretty specific policy goals like health care reform, leaving Iraq and repealing the tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans. Short of sending John Boehner to one of those glorious ACORN reeducation camps, there isn't even a slim chance he and the other members of the GOP leadership would work with Obama toward those goals.

Nor is there some fantastic middle ground between the two sides, because Republicans will oppose whatever it is Obama and the Democratic leadership want to do. If Obama came out tomorrow and said he supported school vouchers, there is no doubt in my mind that Rush Limbaugh and John Boehner would be spewing some garbage about how Obama is doing it wrong, and vouchers were an idea straight of the Soviet Union. And where's his birth certificate?

We should judge Obama and the Democrats on their ability to pass effective legislation to turn this country around. Now ask yourself, is that more or less likely if they have to deal with the Republicans?

Obama won't win a second term even with the Hispanic vote. Not only is his so-called popularity waning but his hatred for the middle class will be his undoing. Palin won't win either, but she will continue to promote America nonetheless.
