McCain To Vote No On Sotomayor

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has announced he will oppose the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. McCain indicated that he felt she was too much of a judicial activist. Since he voted against her nomination to the Appeals Court in 1998 this is at least a consistent decision.

What impact it will have on his re-election campaign next year is unclear. On the one hand the move could help calm the hard right of the party who has been upset with him over the years. At the same time there is a large base of Hispanic voters in Arizona who could be upset.

In any case Sotomayor is still going to be confirmed. The current trend seems to indicate only a few Republican votes for Sotomayor and few (if any) Democratic votes against her. This would suggest a tally of 66-34 or so when the vote comes to the floor.

Look for McCain's retirement announcement sometime before he has to commit to the 2010 campaign. If not, look for Democrats rubbing their hands at the idea of this political “weapon” being handed to them.

This is no weapon, nor is any other pathetic Republican opposition even if merely for opposition's sake.

Now that some more GOP members of Congress may retire, especially given how powerful the Democrats have become — less, not more, fun for Republicans seen in the future (retirements that are likely to make the Dems even more powerful, while adding Republicans to the lobbyist corps), that is another matter. Of course, much also depends on current and future Democratic conduct, which has been causing substantial concern among the better-informed among the public recently.
