Jim,

It is hard to take a link that confuses not-for-profit and nonprofit. That are not equivalent. Remember, Harvard University is a not-for-profit corporation just like the AFL-CIO or the American Physical Society.

The not-for-profit cannot make a profit because there is no one to distribute the profit to. At best when a hospital makes a "profit" they should reinvest the income and put some of the revenue above costs for the years when they lose money.

Rudi, As you noted, 18% of hospitals are operated as for profit. I counted government hospitals as the same as not-for-profit. A university owned hospital would look and operate the same as a not-for-profit and would look to same to most people.

Another thing that most people forget is how few physicians are actually employees of a hospital. As an HCA hospital, the only physicians who work for HCA are the hospitalist who cover the off hour shifts. A for profit hospital operates like a hotel for the physicians.

Of course, how does people like Ms. Huffington who have servants, assistants, and driver expect people to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

also, public utilities worked until environmental laws came along. No city or county has the will to fight their way through the environmental paperwork to get a new power plant open.

while I belong to and enjoy Huffpo, I have to say it is troubling that they rely more and more on misleading and hyped up headlines.
And there is a constant refrain of fear mongering lately in regard to the economy. Some of us believe Arianna has a vendetta or obsessive dislike of the Treasury Sec. Not that he is all that but, honestly, it is a bit on the obessive dislike side

It and TPM wouldn't be so popular if the corporate owned media (CNN, FOX,NBC, ABC, CBS, CLEAR CHANNEL, etc) understood that it's job is to report the news and to inform it's viewers and not to pump out corporate propaganda and commercials for Financial Companies, Drug Companies and Car Companies.

And SD, 100% of hospitals should be not for profit, 100% of utilities should be public utilities owned lock stock and barrel by the communities in which they operate and 100% of all prisons should be owned and run by the government.

About 80% of the Hospitals in the U.S. are not for profit. If you were treated in one versus an HCA hospital, they would look the same, operate the same way, and most people cannot tell the difference.

Why do people who work in an industry where 20 something will work for free to get their foot in door not understand is an industry where people expect to be paid when they show up in the middle of the night to work.

Do the liberal elite in the U.S. expect people to work nights, weekends, and holidays in lousy conditions for free or for internship pay? The last thing people who have assistants, car services, and private jets need to do is criticize others.
