And when and if this young man is found guilty of some wrongdoing,—by a properly adjudicated court-martial, if his wrongdoing is that serious— perhaps we may want the U.S. military to render justice and sentencing, and the execution of such sentence, rather than the Taliban.

I’ve been reporting for over a week (along with the AP and WaPo) that Bowe Bergdahl, the US soldier who’s gone missing in eastern Afghanistan, walked off the base on his own accord.

Now, somebody close to the people searching for Bergdahl has repeated this assertion saying that the soldier left “a note behind that said he was going to the mountains to find himself. He took a journal and 4 or 5 knives with him.” My source tells me that Bergdahl arrived at a village and asked if anybody spoke English. That’s when he was captured.

My source tells me that there is no doubt Bergdahl deserted, which in a time of war is punishable by a court martial at the least, or even execution.

Yes, and that speculation implies a negative judgment that is completely inappropriate at this time. There is ONLY ONE thing that matters right now, and that is for the U.S. government to do everything in its power to get Bowe Bergdahl back home safe and unharmed, and for the rest of us to pray for Bergdahl to stay strong and hopeful. To do anything else at this time is deeply wrong and something I would think conservatives especially would want to avoid, since it probably gives a very interesting impression to the Taliban when they see Americans accusing a fellow American in enemy hands of being a deserter, and in some cases having tried and convicted him already and called for his execution. That's really the way we want our enemies to think about Americans' concern for their own citizens, isn't it?

Because there is no report of any type of a capture during military actions, and other places have floated this rumor.

But the main point I am TRYING to make is not is he or is he not a deserter, but “if” he did leave as described, and this man obviously feels he did, then why is it wrong for him to use the word deserter?

I did not say that he then deserved to be captured if true, I did not say I agree that he is being treasonous, etc.

Why did I say anything? Hell, this board and 80% of the discussions here are based on speculations and our opinions of those speculations.
