Having had to learn a second language (well, actually 2.5 languages if you count what I recall of Spanish) due to being an expatriate in France, I can tell you that when you speak more than one language at a functional level, you end up simplifying your speaking through compassion for those who don't speak the language well. I was so happy when my French colleagues chose to use simple words because my French vocabulary was lacking, and I reciprocated by not using $20 words in English when a $0.05 word would do.

It's all well and good to say democrats need to fight against the myths and lies but, putting it into reality is much harder.
During the Bush years the news programs had on republicans 3 to 1 over democrats on a good day. It was said that the republicans won and so, they earned the right.
Now we have on republicans 3 to 1 on a good day and it's said that the republicans need the chance to have a say since they are in the minority.
Our ideas are always treated as out on the fringe even though most of Americans agree with us while the most far rightwing fringe ideas are treated as mainstream.
We present facts and are greeted with skeptism. They present talking points of lies and get parroted like it's written in stone.
The most discredited of their group, the neocons, gave us the biggest foreign policy disaster since Vietnam and yet, now they are mainstream and in our op-ed pages of our biggest newspapers.
I guess I want to impress on you how hard it is for democrats to get their messages out and to be taken seriously by a news media that has been pumped with conservative think for 30 years and still thinking our winning is just some odd once in a generation fluke

I'm like that...I write excellently, but I tend to fumble words, talk very low and mumble often.

"They speak like they write. With Sotomayor this seems to be missing for some reason."

I know more than a few people who do that. They can write things down in clear, concise prose with many "50 cent words". But when they speak, they "regress". Don't know why but hey, we all have our quirks.

But this confirmation hearing is killing me. I'm going to be like Sotomayor's nephews yesterday and doze off.
