I wonder if they were ever ashamed of what they were doing

As more is revealed on the secret warrantless wiretaps and other surveillance of American citizens that President George W. Bush authorized illegally, supposedly to fullfill his “duty” to “keep Americans safe from the terrorists” this quote comes to mind:

When a stupid man is doing something he is ashamed of, he always declares that it is his duty.
-George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950)

We should all be ashamed we let those small men do such great damage.

Whatever Bush is accused of doing in this partisan hit job of a report worked. The U.S. was saved from further attacks by the actions of Bush, Cheney and the Republican administration.

We should all be ashamed of petty left wing partisans trying to disarm the nation for ideological purposes.

If liberals would simply say “Thank You” and stick to Maya Angelou poetry and interpretive dance while conservatives guard the country, things would work out much better.

just like we were saved from the 9/11 terrorist attack after eight months of a Bush, Cheney Republican administration...

Oh, yes I know, it was all Clinton's fault

Just like we were saved from those Anthrax attacks that oddly hit more Dem's than Repub's??

And tell me how invading another country and stretching our troops thin, including the National Guard (which shouldn't serve overseas, anyway), protects us here in the US?

Dorian, "just like we were saved from the 9/11 terrorist attack after eight months of a Bush, Cheney Republican administration.."

I actually don't really blame the Bush administration for the 9/11 attacks (nor the Clinton administration). I DO blame the Bush administration for not taking their jobs seriously in the first place, then using the terrorists as a cover to push their agenda through and grab power. And then not doing what is necessary to protect the country while invading Iraq for their own gain.

In other words I think even if Bush had taken the pre-9/11 warning signs seriously the attacks still would have happened. I'm not sure he could have stopped them. But I do find it appalling that he didn't see it as his duty to protect the American people in the first place. As far as I'm concerned he should have been kicked out of office then and there.

To answer the question of the post, "I wonder if they were ever ashamed of what they were doing" I would say: NO. They did what they wanted to do for their own gain. They had to do everything in their power to stay in power and to keep who they considered a threat to their ideology at bay.

I would have preferred, and so would thousands of 9/11 and Iraq war victims, for Bush to take " the pre--9/11 warning signs seriously." Now, we'll never know if "he could have stopped them."

Yes, me too. But more importantly is that whether or not the attacks happened Bush didn't see fit to even try to protect the nation against terrorists attacks.

We can blame whoever we want to, the attacks happened... but Bush didn't even make an effort to protect the country, as he swore he would when he took the oath of office, and that's worse than making an effort but failing. Bush had (and still has) his priorities screwed up. The only good thing he did was go into Afghanistan, but then he pulled out before completing the job. Now we're almost back to square one there. I don't know how spying on average American citizens as we go about our shopping would gain Bush the intelligence to find bin Laden in his bat cave on the other side of the world.

I know we generally see eye to eye on stuff and I think we mostly agree with each other on this.... My comments above are out of frustration over Bush and directed more to the general ethereal space than to you.

We still do, SB. The thing of Bush knowing or not knowing, doing or not doing something about 9/11,we were discussing was just about nuances. Albeit, those nuances would have made a heck of a difference in thousands of human neings living or dying, but that is not your or my fault.
