Ms. Carr,

As a card carrying liberal, I am loathe to agree with you, but I do.

As a resident of the Peoples Republic of Portland (OR), I have watched all three west coast states - under the leadership of my fellow Democrats - pile on the goodies. Frankly, I do believe in many of the liberal positions on health care, defense, national security, etc. But, I do like to see a certain amount of fiscal discipline.

Unfortunately, the Republicans are, and have been, just as dangerous. Liberals pile on expenses, conservatives destroy revenue. Both sides have preached to their constituencies one thing our mothers all taught us never works: To wit, having our cake and eating too.

The concept of any kind of fiscal responsibility seems to have flown out the window with LBJ's "guns and butter", repeated by Bush II's "We can make war and never pay for it". Some people conveniently tend to forget that Obama arrived with to a $1 Trillion deficit.

Creativity? We don't need no stinkin' creativity!

Clearly, Neverland didn't die with Michael Jackson.

Richard York

These two diametrically opposed political parties are preventing progress in every area of concern. I am amazed that we have such massive government influence and yet no progress. Having a Federal Government, fifty state + territory governments many larger than most sovereign nations, and, tens of thousands of country and municipalities all unable or unwilling to address REAL problems effectively. The entire country has a bury your head in the sand mentality. It all begins with “Belief” so obviously nobody believed there was a problem.

IMO our form of government is failing us.

Ms. Carr forgets the primary mover of many budget shortfalls - the conservative move to cut taxes across the board. This is generally given under the promise that cutting taxes "always" results in more revenue. If that isn't magical thinking, you must be on the other side of the looking glass.
