Today, it is easy to dismiss Carter as a failure in foreign policy, especially in his last two years of office. But at the time, Democrats defended his actions vigorously, just as they defend Obama now. Of course, Obama may turn out to be far more capable. But an accurate comparisons demands that we look at what Democrats said about Carter in 1979, not after the end of the Cold War. Beware the dangers of hindsight, which is rarely 20/20.
