Quote of the Day: Dick Polman On John Ensign

The political Quote of the Day comes from Dick Polman, writing on the scandal swirling around John Ensign:

Nevada Republican Sen. John Ensign, the erstwhile rising GOP star who…copped to an affair with an aide’s wife, wants to ban gay marriage via a federal constitutional amendment. In 2004, he declared that it was important “to defend the institution of marriage….The effort to pass a constitutional amendment reaffirming marriage as being between a man and a woman only is being undertaken strictly as a defense of marriage against the attempt to redefine it and, in the process, weaken it. Marriage is an extremely important institution in this country, and protecting it is, in my mind, worth the extraordinary step of amending our constitution.”

In light of his announcement yesterday, I think that I understand his position:

Under the terms of a constitutional amendment that safeguards the institution of marriage, an extramarital affair shall be solely between a man and a woman.

Ok, that's a good play on a phrase by Polman, kudos to him.

However, “rising GOP star”?? This blog pretty well mentions any and every more-than-insignificant politician/office holder in the course of a year.

Find a mention of Ensign in your 5 years of archives. Polman's 3rd grader attempt to all of a sudden make this guy into someone important to the Republican Party is so obvious as to be pathetic.

John Ensign had to resign a leadership position in the Senate over this scandal.

I think it's fair to say he was important to the Republican Party.

Characterizing Ensign as a “rising star” in the Republican Party, just like quoting some South Carolina GOP “activist” who told an off-color joke, is simply another symptom of the neurosis of the left.

If it weren’t so intellectually dishonest, we on the right could pick out a number of choice statements from rising stars of the Democrat Party – like Cynthia McKinney. Perhaps we could show that a California Democrat activist advocates four herbal tea enemas per day for all Americans, followed by harmonic chanting to the Great Earth Mother and conflate this as the position of the entire Democrat Party (which I’m sure it is).

Since there are no core principles on the left, nothing Democrats can point to or explain that says this is the basis of our beliefs of policies, they are constantly trying to find anything to affirm that their jumbled pandering is a legitimate reason for being.

Lacking that, they try to destroy the institutions that, by their very existence, show the shallowness and vapidity of their own beliefs. It is hypocritical of someone who speaks strongly in defense of marriage to have an affair, but its fine for someone who touts public schools to send their children to a private one (and deny access to poor kids who could have gone there). Racist jokes are bad when told by someone who isn’t even an elected official, but charmingly funny when made by the Vice President.

What a chore it must be to stretch and conflate each minor incident in order to defend one’s membership in a rudderless “social club”.

    Jwest–

Cynthia McKinney lost her job as an elected official in a Democratic primary in 2006.

I don't think she qualifies as a rising star.

JWest Why can't we let the gays be just like Ensign and Gingrich. Let them cheat and divorce their spouses whenever they want. The likes of Gingrich, Vitter and Ensign sure are upholding their vows and making tradional marriage safe.

  8. jwest says:

    Rudi,

As I’ve stated before, I couldn’t care less if gays marry each other or their 1987 Buick. It makes no difference to me.

Now, how do you and George feel about Obama sending his kids to private school while making it impossible for poor families to do the same?

How about it Dorian? Does it take your breath away?

Rationalize about “security” all you want, but it comes down to elitist hypocrisy.

Don’t you find it hypocritical that someone would complain about hypocrisy while practicing it?

  9. DaGoat says:

It's sad to see the left practicing the politics of personal destruction.

“John Ensign had to resign a leadership position in the Senate over this scandal.”

Just to set the record straight, no, John Ensign didn’t have to resign a leadership position in the Senate over this scandal.

There is a difference between Republicans and Democrats that I’ll explain knowing that it won’t be understood by a large part of the TMV readers. You see, when Republicans do something they are ashamed of, they take it upon themselves to make amends in some form or another. It shows that they realize what they did was not in keeping with the standards they have set for themselves.

Democrats, on the other hand, have no concept of the word “shame”. Regardless of what they do or how obvious their guilt, no thought of doing the honorable thing ever enters their mind. To enable these shameless individuals, the balance of the Democrat Party will not, under any circumstances, acknowledge the misbehavior or crimes their brethren have committed.

One group has a conscience, a sense of honor and desire to do the right thing, the other group does not.

This difference becomes evident in their actions, policies and governance.

If Ensign was a Democrat, he would still be denying everything, lawyering up, refusing to talk about it, deflecting blame, hiding cash in his freezer, running into hotel bathrooms to avoid the press and a hundred other tactics other than telling the truth.

    Jwest–

As for Ensign's resignation, I'll leave it to the vast internet audience to decide whether or not your analysis is correct. My point was in response to Casualobserver saying he was not someone important to the Republican Party. He had a leadership post in the Senate.

I'm not quite sure what Obama has personally done to make it impossible for poor families to sent their children to private schools. But I'm looking forward to your explanation.
