We don't always do that well. But what we are attempting is magnificently more ambitious than our critics dare consider, and our accomplishment already far beyond other nations.

The risk is that each expansion of brotherhood causes a counterreaction, not in the bigots, but in the generous spirits, who deep in their souls find some new group, identified not by ethnicity but by ideology, to sneer at and exclude.

Just as other countries are held together by blood or faith or race, this nation of mutts is bound by the rule of law and an explicit contract between the government and the people.

Thank you for sharing your idealistic vision. And, I say that sincerely. We need idealists, even if it does sometimes require the suspension of our disbelief. Perhaps if more people wore those rose colored glasses, we could be……………….but, no we weren't, and no we aren't……….but wouldn't it be nice.
